Do you really want flying mount where you can skip through all the contents and the massive world? Also, make the world feel small again, less interactive with players, and the world don't feel dangerous to travel again? I'm just not so sure it's a good ideas. We have airship for this kind of thing. FFXI have no flying mount and it do just fine. Let not make FFXIV become wow again.
None of that changes anything, you can skip it already and there's no penalty for dying, and you can already cross whole areas in about 2 minutes. Nothing will change by being able to fly over it except your view of the landscape.Do you really want flying mount where you can skip through all the contents and the massive world? I know, but in expansion they emphasize the word "Massive New Area" It's not the same thing we are getting right now. Seam like we are getting something similar to 1.0 and FFXI where the world is massive and take awhile to travel again.
Unless they introduce group areas for the open world, as in areas that have mobs that can EASILY kill a solo player (as in if you get hit with Heavy running by them, you're going to die), then flying mounts changes nothing. Every one of us does not care much about aggroing something... in fact, it's just an annoyance more than anything else.
By the way things seem so far, it seems like the impression of it is that it is necessary to fly to gain the feel of the area. The cracked floating terrains kind of support that idea. This is something that WoW did not capitalize on. They focused on the leveled ground of the environment, rather than utilizing what options flight can provide. Heck, Blizzard completely shelved several concepts of flight, including one that was advertized on the box itself of Burning Crusade (aerial combat).
I'm hoping SE makes the emphasis of flight content to be about the capability to fly. I wouldn't worry much about it ruining old content neither, as I'm sure there's going to be restrictions on use of flight to being expansion areas only.
Uhh... you're quite the boring person to be around if you really think airships aren't something ANYONE in general would want. Being from 1.0, which btw I am... along with 7yrs of FFXI since NA launch, means nothing as to what would or would not be enjoyable to the player base. I can tell you that your mindset of thinking the idea of an airship being bad is not shared by the majority. In fact, those of us that did play 1.0 were absolutely thrilled by the idea that we would, one day, have airships. The casual hoard that came to FFXIV will want airships, less time to get the best gear, and anything that may take a little bit longer will be whined about until the devs cave in. I played 1.0 because it fascinated me. I, like the OP, enjoyed the danger of traveling and the massive maps, no matter how tedious and copy and paste they were, and the time I invested in the game reaped a satisfaction that 2.0 has yet to give me. We ran speed runs to try and improve our skill and pop and extra chest. It is now just to save time.
I am going to predict that the casuals will continue to run over us legacy players and drive out hardcore gamers until this game because nothing more than an easy to beat free to play. Devs will not hear cries like mine, instead, they focus at all the ruckus these casual are causing. I think we need to have the game hit a dead point to where only the hardcore will stay and stick it out to drive these casual players out.

You took the "Massive New Area" too literally.
It could just mean they're adding another 10 or something zones.
Also i thought I heard mention of only being able to takeoff in certain areas- really though there's no point in this "sky is falling" attitude. You do not have all the facts of how it will work yet- how about we just wait and see, hmm?
People are lazy, they do not want to have to actually travel anywhere with any degree of difficulty. If the game had a button they could press that would instantly teleport them to any mission location with zero travel they would O in glee. Idiocracy is not a movie, it is a prophecy.
The Flying mounts will be more of use in I'shguard so we totally need them
If none have posted a video yet, enjoy

I quite like how Mists of Pandaria handled the whole flying thing. If I recall correctly, you could not fly there until you had basically got to the highest level, meaning that you had to actually explore the land/content before you get the ability to fly.
Given how FFXIV progression is wrapped around the main campaign, it could be feasible that you do not actually get the skill to fly until we beat the expansion story or get to level 60. Anyway, I actually think that flying mounts could increase the exploration nature of the game, what with the floating mountains and areas only assessable to flying.
