I quite like how Mists of Pandaria handled the whole flying thing. If I recall correctly, you could not fly there until you had basically got to the highest level, meaning that you had to actually explore the land/content before you get the ability to fly.

Given how FFXIV progression is wrapped around the main campaign, it could be feasible that you do not actually get the skill to fly until we beat the expansion story or get to level 60. Anyway, I actually think that flying mounts could increase the exploration nature of the game, what with the floating mountains and areas only assessable to flying.

I have no issues with airships coming into the game. I wonder if you will be able to fit a party on one.

People already do that. In any outside place of Eorzea, including the heavily populated beastmen "strongholds", you can skip and run past any enemy you see with no consequences whatsoever. Same with low level characters, a low level character can make his way to Mor Dhona simply by walking, past the high level monsters and whatnot. The same applies to teleporting.

So I'm afraid you are worrying about something that is already happening.

you're assuming it'd all be implemented the exact same as how WoW did it. Which it almost certainly won't.

Yes we do. It adds an additional element to the game which can be enjoyed by people, if the flying mount element of the game is done in an intelligent and competent way such as well designed zones that are created with their use in mind...adding content like flying islands/locations which make use of it or air based fighting plus other things then by all means they should add it.

From what I understand they are not making the entire game open to flying mounts, only certain new zones which are suited and built around their use so the world won't feel any more empty and in fact will feel less empty because of doing it this way as opposed to just plopping flying mounts into the game without any content dedicated to their presence.

WoW's problem is they plopped flying mounts in which could be used in many zones with no regard for how much flying based content to interact with in those zones outside of a couple quests and couple flying platforms in one single zone (at least last time I played it), the rest of the world was not designed with them in mind and there was no content present in most of the world which made use of them outside of flying from A to B when you could of just rode a ground based mount or walked there (all the content in those zones being ground based locations, quests and fights).

The way I saw it, the new zones are broken up and above Eorzea. What makes you think you can be in flight full time in every zone? Could very well make it that the chocobos cannot fly in other zones. Just the the new sky zones. There is something that is allowing these upper continents to exist and float in the sky. Some sort of magic perhaps? This magic could also be what allows chocobos to take flight in these designated areas.

Well we know that theres different elevations in each map, so it would be impossible to reach on the ground. They could also add flying monsters to add danger in flying. Also with flying monsters, imagine fighting them on your Airship <.<

I say we wait and see how it all plays out.

I don't understand why they are bringing flying mounts either. First, the maps in FFXIV are generally small. It takes literally one minute tops to get anywhere. There are also already teleports everywhere lol. Not to mention, a lot of people complain that there is not enough experience in open world. And if anyone played WoW, you'll know that flying mounts essentially killed that.

Well, I'm fairly certain the mounts only work in the new zones. Also from what we've seen in the pictures, walking isn't entirely possible unless you can well... fly. For all we know there may be flying monsters and plenty of aggro. Imagine you get hit enough you drop out of the sky and just die *Snickers*

You are right, the current maps are very small, but we were told these new ones were going to be quiet large. I'd say it would be safe to wait and see before getting too upset.
