Welcome! ^^
;-; I'm sorry for the wall of text!
It can be a bit overwhelming if this is your first MMO.
My biggest advice is to go at your own pace and play what you love. Make sure you are comfortable with the world, the controls, etc before proceeding.
I urge you to read through the Tips, the Tutorial, the Quest Text, NPC dialogue, etc. It will keep you from getting lost as you travel through Eorzea. Once you accustom yourself to FFXIV you can choose whether or not to skip quest text, cut scenes, etc. It's very important that you skip things only after you have your bearings.
Personally, I recommend watching the cut scenes but each to his own. ^^
As a Marauder you will eventually become a Warrior. You will be what is known as a Tank when it comes to group content. While group content relies on the whole group working together and each role is equally valuable, Tank and Healer roles are perceived as "more difficult". This is because if a Tank or Healer mess up, your group won't get very far.
That being said, don't be afraid to look to the Warrior subforum here as well as Reddit for tips. Even with tips the best way you will learn to tank is by doing so. One thing I always do when I have to tank a new dungeon is go with friends. That way I can take my time and even if I make mistakes it is in a controlled situation. More then that, it allows me to experience a dungeon at my pace since I like to really look into every nook and cranny the first time around.
If Tanking isn't your thing at level 10 you will be able to change classes. If you follow the main scenario storyline, you will gain access to the other cities in no time. Make sure to attune yourself to the Aetherites in each city. More importantly, feel free to experiment with the other classes that will become open to you.
I recommend finding a good Free Company or Linkshell that meets your play-style and play time. Free Companies (FC's) are player run groups or guilds. You can only have one FC at a time. Linkshells are separate chat channels, also player run. They have a number of functions ranging from socializing to creating a pool of skilled players to pull from for difficult content. You can have eight of those.
I also recommend being honest about your experience level. If you are new, please state that you are new. The majority of players will appreciate that fact and they can adjust their playstyle as necessary. They can assist you in the dungeons and give you tips on the bosses or even tanking.
One thing I would like to tackle is some negative aspects of the community- namely the jerk players.
Like in real life, you will meet all sorts of people. Likewise, in FFXIV you will meet all sorts of players. Some will be good, some will be bad, some will be trolls and others will be awesome. If you should run into trolls, don't feed (respond to) them. They thrive off of negative attention and their single aim is to make you upset.
Instead, simply report them for harassment and remove either them or yourself from the situation. Don't get discouraged by those types of players. However loud, they are a minority.
If you meet players that are trying to give you advice, remember that most aren't trying to be condescending. Have an open mind and remember that since we are communicating through text it can be misunderstood easily.
Lastly, follow the golden rule. Treat others how you would like to be treated.
If you have further questions, feel free to ask! I'll be happy to help in any way I can! ^^

That covered most of it.
I'll add:
1. If you are on a PS get a keyboard. Chatting is essential.
2. As a Marauder, Overpower is your friend.
3. Make sure you are doing your class quests from your guild every 5 levels.
4. If you stick with Marauder, you should also pick up Paladin and get it to 22 to get both Flash and Provoke. That advice is covered in the tanking guides though.
You need to immerse yourself in every guide you can find there are many of them out there on the internet. Tanking can be a very demanding job so perhaps it wasn't the best choice in the world to start with but if you do your research and play the game you should be able to understand the basics of Tanking and then the rest is about experience and learning. Join an FC and meet other players and when you play with others listen to them. You'll quickly learn the difference between somebody being a jerk for the sake of it and somebody giving you helpful constructive criticism. Develop a thick skin and don't take everything personally.
As a Tank your job is to hold the threat off other players basically you need to be seen as the biggest threat to enemies so they all attack you since you can take a lot more punishment and have skills to reduce damage. You also will learn skills that taunt enemies and increase your threat. You need to be able to watch all enemies and keep threatening and attacking them to keep their attention on you. Healing also creates a lot of threat so you need to make sure you keep up on everything because the Healer is the weakest member of the party and will take the least punishment before being killed. The Healer in turn is the one person who will keep you alive. DD or Damage Dealers can also create a lot of threat with powerful damage skills so you can see how hard your job can be when a lot of skills are being used around you. It's not just about keeping threat but knowing when you lost threat and doing something about it.
