I'd be happy if they can allow for npcs to be companion and not chocobos

It could make a good alternative for story missions, where grouping with people would involve skipping cutscenes.
Path companions is something they really should add back, would make things much more interesting I think.
Didn't they already comment something along the lines of having squad we can manage and level for the purpose of doing older content without the need for a whole party of PC's? I thought this was coming for heavensward, if not at launch then through a 3.X patch later on. I'll see if I can find a quote.
EDIT:
Found the quote. While it doesnt look to be exactly what the OP is requesting, it might have a better (or worse) implementation than the path companion. It still sounds like a work in progress but I'm quite intrigued and this will help with a lot of little things people have had issues with.

Q: In a previous magazine interview you commented that you want to have dungeons that can be soloed. Will this ever make its way into the game?
A: While we do not have any plans to add a new dungeon meant for soloing, we’re currently looking into making it so the current dungeons geared towards light parties can be undertaken solo.
Additionally, while this is still in the planning phase, we’ve been tossing around an idea to make it so you can form your own military unit under your Grand Company, recruit subordinate NPCs, and then take them to dungeons to train them.

Derp. You beat me too it while I was editing my post. I was literally about bring up that quote.Didn't they already comment something along the lines of having squad we can manage and level for the purpose of doing older content without the need for a whole party of PC's? *Ahem* Anyway:
It's still up in the air though if they'll go through with it or not. Personally, I'd love to see mercenary NPC allies to that can be recruited to tag with you in older dungeon content, especially the Main Scenario dungeons. NPC allies, as many problems as they might possibly bring, would also solve quite a few problems as well.
"But! But! This is an MMO!"
*Looks over at Guild Wars*
NPC allies. Quite a bit of focus on it in that game. It even went as far as to allowing you recruit alternate characters on your own account as NPC allies to tag along with you in later patch updates, giving players extra incentive to work on and make alt characters.
sounds just like what they are proposing in my quote! Cant wait to see how they do this because as the game grows, this will be more and more necessary.Derp. You beat me too it while I was editing my post. I was literally about bring up that quote.

I wish they would have stuck with their original blueprint (though I can totally understand why they didn't) and kept much of the old 1.0 content in the game (stuff like quests and storyline content was supposed to be 'merged' with the new client at some point, but they weren't able to do it). I'd love to have gone through some of the older class quest content, and have messed around with Path Companions.
Me too! I'd like it if we could take our retainers along with us. We already gear them and level them, so why not include them in the pool of NPCs we can take on missions?
Aaah, I remember my path companion. An overly dark short haired keeper femqote. Overly coquettish and useless in battle. A CNJ she was, but little did she use her skills.
