    Player commendations with meaning?

As it sits right now I think a lot of people will quickly hit a commendation before they leave the dungeon just to get it off before people leave so they can complete that weekly achievement in their challenge log.

What bothers me about this is that it devalues the entire system.

My suggestion would be to add drop-down menus to the UI for player commendations, just a simple few options with the first option being "I just want to do this before people leave" or something to that extent. Other options being "played class/job acceptably" or "social player" .etc.

Recommendations are like a quick survey. Traditional surveys only have approximately a 4% completion rate Gartner metrics. The longer the survey the lower the percentage of completion. As this survey system is extremely quick to complete, it garners a much higher completion % than traditional surveys. As soon as you add more options, you increase the complexity. Which would bring the results much closer to traditional survey results very quickly. I am pretty completion is valued higher than "accuracy" by the devs.
The following is anecdotal experience I have seen; the higher the dungeon/trial/raid run; the less likely people seem to give recommendations. Mostly because they just want to get their loot and leave, then re-queue for the next dungeon/trial/raid.

I would like to see a decommendation option for people who are complete jerkfaces, get too many bad comms get penalized.

-->>with a comendation system at all if people just check it off quickly to get the challenge log entry complete? I'd rather have a 1% completion rate on the thing than a 50% completion rate with no meaning to the commendations. Besides, even with more options, people will still hit the thing to complete their challenge log, just that with options they may actually give the person an idea of if they played well or if they just got a commendation to complete someone elses challenge log. Also that's why I said the first option could be "I just want to do this before people leave" that way for those that just want to smack it for their challenge log and get out, the option is still there but then when people get meaningless commendations, at least then they would know it. (Due to stupid message limits I had to split into 2 messages just to do a quote, WTG SE!)

Actually, what people will do is not read the question, and take the first option on the list automatically. I see this at work all the time with our surveys.

Save the original message within the 1000 character limitation then edit your posting, during edit there is no size limitation.

I guess you missed the part in which I said the first option would be "I just want to do this before people leave" as to filter out those people and render their commendations meaningless as they should be.

While I don't doubt that a good amount of people actually put thought into the commendations I am willing to bet that a lot do not and I see this more now that I am playing a tank (tanks generally go to the top of the list by default). The one dungeon I ran I got 3 commendations and that's when I had to stop and think "Did I really deserve that or were people just trying to get it off before others left."

That said 2 other changes could be made:
Remove the challenge log for commendations that way people aren't just giving commendations in order to reward themselves (sure the amount of commendations given out will drop drastically but I'd rather have 5 commendations I deserve than 2000 that I don't).
Create a 10 second pause before people can leave the dungeon (it just took half an hour or more to run the thing, what's an extra 10 seconds?) That way people don't feel pressured to hit the commendation before everyone bails.

Maybe if they replaced it, like instead of giving 10 commendations for exp, you can instead receive 10 commendations for exp.

While I don't doubt some put no thought, there's plenty of time DURING an event to think "well that tank was able to get aggro really quick" or "that healer did the cleric stance dance really well", etc... I vote "quickly", but I pay attention during the fight; I only need two seconds because I paid attention to other players during the previous 10-30 mins and have selected my MVP(s). Don't assume quick = No thought.

If in addition to that, I also had to pick an option, I wouldn't really mind. However, sometimes the other players that deserve commendations leave very quickly. That one extra question could reduce people's ability to give the MVP the commendation he or she deserves because said person might have left already.

If I'm really impressed with someone's performance (usually Bards who play Requiem for my WHM when there's no BLM/SMN, that is super rare) I tell them at some point to give me a chance to commend them before they leave.
