Gunners have been in XIV since September 2010 - Their guild has been there since prior to the calamity story wise. Merlwyb is very clearly a representative of it as she's not only the leader of Limsa, but also one of the top ranking (best) Musketeer's ever known, which is why during 1.0's story, the way you held the gun in the story reminded them of their "lost" captain (Merlwyb). The precedent has existed for as long as Final Fantasy XIV existed.

e're getting our new DPS in two days. Nowhere has it been said that we'd be getting ANOTHER damage dealer class in 3.0, only one tank and one healer.

Which is why if the gunner is a healer, it would pretty much throw any "LORE!" excuses SE will use out the window from here on out. Nothing says there will be only 2 jobs, every FFXI expansion that introduced jobs introduced 3 or more jobs except for WoTG and SoA.

It would be much easier for Musketeer DPS branch into 2 jobs, one healer (using smaller guns like SCH use diferent books), another one DPS. If they give Chemist something like the Mix command that functions like Mudras they can even add more skills then normal, just like Ninjutsu.

Also I don't know why people are using NIN as the other DPS we were promised. Multiples jobs have to be more then 2. Lets not forget the chick with a rapier in the artbook cover.
