Sure OP could be right, but at this point it sounds more like OP wants it to be a dps and is trying to convince her/himself that it is. Personally I still have some hope it is Chemist because there are some interesting albeit not probable speculation around it.
The chick was a Monk..as stated, she even use the Monk weapons from XI (though gunified like all other Garlean technology.)
It's because ever since 1.0 and even post ARR launch there's quite a lot of data that's easily found to support the 'speculation' as you say and those who've played Square's job based games (including the MMOs) know full well how things tend to be programmed because it's the way they almost always program their battle system with so few people. (and funnily enough, usually the same people too.)
Let me ask you a question and answer this honestly:
Do the Goblin Snipers and Marksmen heal when they shoot you? Are they healing you when they shoot you?
Does the Admiral heal when she shoots people? Did she heal the Sahagin she shot? Has the Death Penalty ever been a gun used to heal people?
Of course Yoshida cares not for how jobs normally were designed (and sorry haters, designs go back past FFXI) but a gunner that's a healer? It does indeed mean it will be shoddy DPS as it needs to be able to properly heal, meaning most of its skills are heal based rather than damage based.
It will probably be like how Corsair was a support, but could DPS, and something else entirely would be a healer.

Gun as the way of doing DPS (the way you'd expect a WHM to use Stone/Aero or a SCH to stack dots on the mob), potion-related abilities to act as heals. It's not as outlandish as you're making it out to be. The only real question is whether it'll start off with a DPS-focused class and then get a healer job crystal (like my Musketeer => Chemist suggestion) or whether it would be built as a healer from the ground up.Of course Yoshida cares not for how jobs normally were designed (and sorry haters, designs go back past FFXI) but a gunner that's a healer? Here's a picture I found relevant to this concept. Here's another one. And, of course, everyone's favorite.

* The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
* Design ideas:
Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)
So Merlwyb has guns and may be a musketeer. Why does that automatically mean that which ever class comes next that uses a gun also has to be a musketeer? IF it is a healer, then it makes for something different supplementing heals with physical attacks instead of magical ones - sort of like Rosa in FF4 with her heals and bow.
I don't get why everyone is assuming that you will heal people by shooting them lol.

It will most likely be a dps class

So... do people keep forgetting about that one artwork image that was leaked recently featuring all the current (including ninja) jobs as well as 2 in the middle? And that the two in the middle are wielding a Rapier and a Greatsword (Dark Knight)?
It would be foolish to ignore that rapier...

The connection between the rapier and musketeer comes from a general misconception that was not helped by Alexander Dumas' book. Musketeers were the predecessor to the modern rifleman. Yes, they had a sidearm in the way of a sword, knife, or axe before bayonettes were developed and became standard attachments for rifles.

As a Note, the Story NPC's most generally represent BASE CLASSES (e.g. Merlwyb - Musketeer, Raubahn - Gladiator, Thancred - Rogue).
Merlwyb is a Musketeer, this speaks nothing of what Job Musketeers develop into.
There is no clue as to the Musketeer's Job-Branch in her or in Limsa's Musketeer's Guild.
Calling it now:
DPS - Red Mage
Healer - Agent/Chemist
Tank - Dark Knight
Hopeful for an additional DPS-Gun Job but sadly doubting it...
