Wow. I am so ready right now!
Those tiny wings..
Why fly when I can teleport
Remember that 1.0 you could teleport to aetheral gates - as long as aether is still XIV's lifestream, teleportation is possible no matter what, unless of course, mages don't exist beyond Ishgard.
They also had to rebuild the Aetherytes, so the current ones we ahve are not the original ones from 1.0, which were destroyed by megaflare.
We are currently using technology funded by Ul'dah to teleport around, which is why the natural aetheric gates no longer exist.
There was a lore post by Fernhalwes about this somewhere.
Bahamut sucked up all that aether and reworked how the nodes worked, (and materia and linkshells as well) and eliminated them, when he remodeled the planet, which is why we don't even have node teleportation now though. And there are 1-2 quests that even talk about how Dravania is unpopulated wilderness, and that the Sharlayans fled the destruction of some sort of event and used what resources they had left to "redo" the 1.0 aethernet system, with Ul'dah coin, due to Bahamuts destruction.
So.....who knows? But I'd really be all for less teleports in the outlands.... maybe 3-4 total on REALLY far reaching places? Or hell, maybe even being able to use Alagan tech to travel from, after all, they DID cover all of the planet at one point in time, hence the tomestone drops everywhere. We shall see though.
