Let me maks an important addition to your listFF2: Was somewhat tanky I guess? No particular abilities that suited it.
FF3 DS: Not a tank
FF4:Arguable but I'd say no because if you think they're a tank here then you think Dragoons were tanks as well. Drk/DRG were better at taking hits than the other party members but Paladin was the only true tank imo.
FFT wotl: Obviously not a tank
FFX-2: Not a tank
FF11: Not a tank
Bravely Default: Not a tank
FFXIV:ARR: Definitely a tank.

the reply was towards a person who said they were mainly tanky in previous games. I said absolutely nothing about this game or DRK being tanks(I don't care that much either way). So your smart ass comment is irrelevant
I figured after BRD, SMN, and SCH people would be ready to just go with the flow of what SE wants the jobs to be in XIV. Seems I was mistaken, silly me.

I know this game needed a new tank, but somehow I just don't think Dark Knight is really a fitting choice. We're talking about a job which historically sacrifices HP to deal bonus damage and relies on supplemental black magic. They've ALWAYS been weak as all hell too, taking hits about as well as a newborn. Goodbye Dark Knight, it was nice knowing you.
Still, it's not the first iconic class to be turned inside out in FFXIV. Black Mage was first, after all. I still held hopes for a different option for tanking though. Runic Fencer from XI perhaps might've been a better option.

is the DRK going to be out on this update? or at a later time...
Missing my little guy everyday, In memory of the biggest part of my heart and soul...
Pretty much the only Dark Knight in the series that's been weak as all hell was FFXI's Dark Knight, and that was because defense in that game didn't mean diddly squat. Warriors were squishy too in that game.
In other FFs they had good defense.
Yeah I remember Cecil/Gafgarion/FFTDarkKnights/Leon taking hits quite well compared to other job/characters. If you made them weaker defense for the sake of power, well that was your call.
Err. . .Dark Knights in FFT (including Gaff) didn't really take hits better than any other class. Their only real advantage was that every turn they could absorb PA*WP HP back from someone in range. There was no actual defense stat in FFT. >_>
The best DRKs were used as tanks in FFXI. They held hate better then any job up until the magic emnity buff. They also where the only job that could cap haste for years. 93.3% weapon delay and capped recast for shadows made them extremely potent for tanking HNMs. Even after delay nerfs and hate nerfs people still used DRK to tank because it could access the best -PDT gear and still maintain DPS for hate. Apoc tanks were particularly effective.

No... they really weren't. They could tank WEAK targets, sure, but they basically required cure-bombing from the white mages, red mages, summoners and etceteras in the party or alliance. Aggro wasn't an issue, but their squishy-as-all-hell bodies sure were!
The reason they 'tanked' is because there was a means to basically cap their haste to extreme levels, making their swings almost as fast, if not AS fast, as a dagger. And on a two-hander, it was simply devastating. Stealing aggro against that is futile, so they relied on NUMBERS rather than having a single DRK tank. If one died, he could be revived and be back in the fight in no time flat.
