I'm only replying to this because Gafgarion was a joke. Just take all his equipment and armor away. =3Yes, with amazing HP equal to PLD and MNK and usually having loads of drain attacks, enfeebles, and absolutely stellar defense.
Anyone who has ever tried killing Gafgarion in FFT will never forget Dark as a tank. He was one guy with gear equal/as good as anyone one person your team, but for many players was absolutely nerve wracking to slay.

Oh! Good old times! I remember that fight, it was funny how you could strip him of all his gear and then laugh at him tryng to kill you with his bare hands. xD
(You had to steal most of his gear anyway if you wanted some of the best equipment in the game)
True that and I agree but it might also serve as an incentive for new players that might want to try the game and choose to play DK because it's the "cool kids" class or something like that, adding more tanks in the end. I think we will have to wait on more info about this class in order to see how things will work out for the expansion.The problem with that logic is that people who dont want to tank but want the shiny benefits of levelling a tank (aka mounts for PLD and WAR) will level it and make others suffer with lousy tanking just to get to 50 and claim said reward.
SE needs to find a way to make tanks more enjoyable to play for everyone, not just the "oh new collectable from levelling a class I dont wanna play, so I'll level it anyway just to get the reward then shelve the class for good" group.

At Zirekile Falls, sure. At Golgorand Execution Site and Gate of Lionel Castle, you had no such option. Hope your Ramza can either solo Gaff or make it to the switch before he dies, or else you get to try to rez through a gate. Have fun with that.
Dark Knight also used scythes in FFXI. Something they have never used prior and since. So...there's that. Everything is subjected to changes.So... am i missing something or is this the Dark Knights first appearance in a final fantasy game as a fully fledged tank?
There is the pseudo tank Cecil in IV but he still makes use of the Darkness ability which either deals aoe damage at the cost of HP or augments his physical attacks at the cost of HP (depends on version).
And then there is the Final Fantasy Dimensions version which is still heavily offensive based but has a provoke like ability as well.
Really, im not seeing any others on the wiki page, all other appearances are entirely offensive based.

Hell, thief was always on the same tier of whms, blms, wars, etc but it got shoved into the remnant of tanaka's 1.00 class system, technically making it a lower tier than the jobs I mentioned.
If they're slowly phasing out the class system, the thie-, err I mean rogue class will be phased out and they'll be gone (ripip thief lovers because ninja will have thief's iconic skill still). If they keep it as is, the system just got even more confusing.

But see, if the class system is going away, ninja can have their own skills (instead of rog + nin) and that way thief might make a come back as it's own pure job. But nin is a newly designed job that is already designed along side the expansion work so it's unlikely that they'll get 17-18 skills that are designed from scratch just for ninja again. So they'll just get the same rog skills again that have all the iconic thief skills.
I can see sch taking almost the acn skills (with job skills rearranged so it'll be easier to heal level 1-30) while the smn gets more brand new pet oriented skills (sigh). Maybe even have carbuncle for low levels again, allowing smns to summon carbuncles even at lvl 30+
