A few JPs complained about it, and SE was (in my opinion) in a panic mode at the time, so they caved in to a tiny but vocal minority, despite most people saying either it didn't matter or leave it alone.
well I'm assuming that they just switched off a certain aspect of AI which included curious and things like the crabs and deer, was probably all lumped together.
I would like to agree to this petition however I think this would work better if it was in an area where mobs were more dispersed. In the game currently flocks of mobs are together in close proximity. While this is nice for farming perhaps putting in a mob like near the entrance of towns that followed you would be fun.

They need to bring it back.. just make it not so stupid. Like the person above me said, have sheep scatter and doe run. Not just monkeys up your ass all the time.
When Yoshi joined the team, the first thing he did was remorselessly cut those features, so don't count on them being back, along with collision detection. It's not like you'll ever be seeing mobs except in instances anyway.
Sad thing is, since mob grinding will do jack all in 2.0, we probably won't get smart ai on regular monsters anymore
It really was the small things that made XI (and XIV) stand out from other MMOs. You were shittin your pants while going through undead territory while weakened prayin your weakness didn't wear or that was it.
People say we need monsters that hit you for 7-9k a hit to instill danger? Pft, give us Undead that aggro low health or monsters that aggro ability usage.
It really is a shame too.. I miss mobs with personalty, but being able to run through monsters in the middle of a fight drives me crazy.. But of course Yoshida loves being able to do that so.. yeah...
