I had some issues when setting up my Gamecube controller (yes I know it gives me less buttons, but I'm a sucker for the shape and feel of that controller). The magnitude/intensity and sensitivity settings were way off by default. Resetting and calibrating it solved all my problems.

Highly recommended as a first step.

Did you find a way to access your potion menu with a controller?

I had a similar problem with a GameStop Xbox360 controller clone (wired).
The right stick (camera control) kept moving upwards every few seconds when not being touched.

Drove me absolutely crazy! I ended up pulling out an old Dual-Action Logitech and it's been flawless ever since.

The above posters are probably right.. darn thing is probably filthy on the inside. Maybe not cookie crumbs, but definitely dust and skin flakes. (eww)

Can We Get a toggle for that toggle?

If you don't mind voiding your warranty (which is probably moot anyway if you've tossed the receipt) you can always unscrew the casing and perform some maintenance on the connectors.

i was using a logitec dual action since release and had zero problems until a few months ago when it finally broke the wire going into the controller itself. i replaced it with a phillips and had major issues with my left thumb pad forcing me to just start randomly running.

i had this issue on my phillips recoil gamepad for a while. i learned that if i unplugged it for a second and then plugged it back in that it worked fine for hours afterwards. i called phillips and they said sometimes the pc would get minor corruption and cause a need to recalibrate, but after unplugging/replugging it seems to fix it. maybe if it acts up on you when not in a critical situation you can try that and see if it clears the issues up for a short time.

I noticed this too when I started using a wireless 360 controller. The analog sticks are extremely sensitive in FFXIV. When I first started using it, they were calibrated fine, but my character would break into a run as soon as she popped up on screen.

I fixed the problem by going into the gamepad's settings (or maybe there's a setting in XIV's config) to make the analog sticks less sensitive.

Your problem used to happen to me alot in the beta, then I noticed the Calibrate setting in the controller settings in the FFXIV Config. The default setting is 0.2, change it to 0.5, for most controllers 0.2 is too low. 0.2 seems to be best for logitech controllers only so far from what I've tested.

That being said, I don't usually eat while I use it, so I think raseol might be right, it's just dirty. Try rotating the stick around a lot, cleaning what you can get to, and maybe even compressed air.
I have that controller, too, been using it since FFXI as well, but the past week or so, whenever I grab it down from the computer desk, I hear that USB-off sound, then a few seconds later, I hear the USB-on sound again. A lot of the time, if I set the controller up on the desk while the game is on, then take it down again to play, it doesn't work for a few seconds, and then if I'm pressing a direction on the analog stick while it reactivates, the game will be stuck pressed in that direction until I do that thing with the controller again. Anyway, I'm thinking something might be broken in the wire, sucks because it's really a good controller, lasted quite a while.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like you're implying the game itself broke the wiring in your controller. Is that what you mean? Because I'm using my controller for this game and I'm also thinking something's not working quite right in the wire.

edit: I'm also having that weird problem with the random running. See my previous post for more details, I think the connection to the USB port is not as good as it used to be, and that's causing the stuck-running.

There is no way the game could send the amount of electricity through the wires in the controller cable necessary to physically damage them. If the controller cable is messed up, it's through normal wear and tear (par for the course with the cheap junk Logitech makes).
