I'll take a 25 hour maintenance that ends on time over a 6 hour maintenance that keeps getting extended to 14 hours, then requires hotfixes during prime hours the next few days.
2.3 was 20 hours, shortened to 18
2.2 was 25 hours, shortened to 22
2.1 was 24 hours, extended to 26
You just know regardless of how many hours they stay offline, whether 6 hours or 24 hours when it comes back online there will still be problems and will be taken down again for a period of time over the following day or so to fix what they messed up. That is why I find it funny when people say I prefer down for longer so when comes back up won't be problems yet there always is no matter how long they extend it for. Just because they extend the expected downtime prior to trying to implement it does not mean will be done right and SE is not good at this sort of thing as they keep refusing to upgrade their infrastructure, trying to squeeze every single last ounce of memory and processing out of their fairly outdated servers.

Late night hotfix when I'm sleeping doesn't concern me. I'm referring to the early FFXI days when they would repeatedly "apologize for the inconvenience" of taking the servers down during NA prime time. I can't recall a specific time when they took down the FFXIV servers before midnight PST for a hotfix since 2.1 came out.
it probably takes 1 hour to patch and verify each server. Theres only a handful of "teams" that are doing the patching.
I dont mind it being extended an extra hour so no one gets ahead in weekly cap. I just hope they dont extend that one hour only to, in the end, release it early anyway >.>
I dont see it ending early this time. They specifically added that hour just to make sure it was after the reset and to avoid a big rush of people trying to get an advantage on tomestones before reset. If it ends early it completely makes that pointless. But we know who we are dealing with here so who knows.
I got the impression they'll be adding more hardware to support the higher database load (read: the new housing additions). Definitely not a 1 hour per server affair, but several hours per data center.
This isn't like installing the client where you click on a .exe and click next a few times and you're done. They need to make sure they don't break anything in the process. Plus it also says they are doing database optimization so they can handle the additional housing plots they are adding. Depending on the size of the database, that will take time.I have never heard of any game going down for 24 hours in the years and years i been playing for a patch maintenance... sure they might add some hardware to try and compensate for their horrible latency issues which haven't gone away much still... but really 24 hours to install a patch and do a quick hardware test??
I can understand 8 hours... but 24 that is insane..
This is a much larger patch than any that have been introduced before, what with introducing a new class. Add to that they're introducing a new weekly currency, so the ideal situation for them is to start at the beginning of the "Game Week" so everyone gets a fresh start.
With the amount of stuff they're giving us I'll gladly take a 24 hour break if it means I get cool stuff to play with.
