    Administrator Access?

So I'm just curious as to why FFXIV is requesting administrator access. It did when I played the beta, and it still does when I launch through Steam.

Is there any way to disable this, or an explanation on why it wants it?

    -[solved]-

The problem was Steam wasn't deleting the install_39210.vdf file inside of my FFXIV install directory (under Steam.) Relatively, every time I launched FFXIV Steam was all "OH HEY FIRST RUN LETS DO THIS OMG"

It's a security thing with Windows... more problematic in the later Windows versions. And it isn't restricted to just XIV--other games and programs can have issues with it too. Certain actions are restricted to the lower user level you typically run in now. Lowering/disabling UAC can mitigate some of the issues that can crop up, but that can leave you exposed to attack vectors if you aren't using best practices for networks/internet.

Ultimately, you may need to assign specific programs to run as administrator in the shortcut's compatibility properties for them to function properly.

Doesn't happen here unless a launcher/client update is required.

Aside from first runs of games, FFXIV is literally the only game on my steam list (219 games and 13 software) that runs in administrator mode. I can't see any real reason for it, either. There is absolutely zero reason why an MMO would need administrator rights on a machine to run it.

    -[edit]-

Apparently it's because I don't have a copy of Rapture3D in my game folders. It did not come with the trial version of the game, and I just copied that over into my steam install director when I purchased it through steam (because forget downloading it /again/)

    -[edit+]-

Apparently I am derp. That was for some F1 game, and I just saw a capital F on the top of the steam thread and read it as FFXIV.

Ok, I was wrong. I don't know WHY but when I launch the game through Steam it asks for admin rights. When I decline it nothing negative happens and I can still play normally.

How can I make it stop? :\

What does that have anything to do with my problem? That checks a box to force it to do what I don't want it to do. I can't double uncheck boxes. Besides, telling me to google it (which I've been doing) defeats the purpose of this board entirely. If you're not going to actually help please go away.

This should have everything to do with fixing your problem. Or have you not been reading the replies in this thread? The very first hit to the HowTo Geeks article is describing a work around to making a game run with admin privileges when launched from within Steam....which, as noted earlier, is what one often needs to do.

Sorry for directing you to a google search result, but I don't use Steam...and the solution appeared to be extremely easy to find. There seems to be a growing trend lately where users either aren't even trying to search the web for solutions, or they have weak google-fu...so I put forth the exact search I used to find what seems like a plausible solution to your problem.

Sorry if you don't find that helpful...but you may want to try following that guide just in case it does indeed fix your issue before you write it off so quickly.

Except FFXIV doesn't need to run as admin, unless an update is being performed.....

its a steam side issue, probably caused by their annoying overlay injection.

I found the issue. It was a combination of Steam and FFXIV. I detailed it in the OP.

It was sort of steam side.

The problem was I did not want it running as an administrator. Relatively, I completely ignored your half-assed attempt at "help." There is no reason why the game needs admin permissions at all in the first place, but apparently it needs them when patching. It was an issue that I have outlined in the OP, and was completely unrelated to permissions settings or anything silly FFXIV was doing.
