Roles inside of Dungeons and PvP [Question]

Hi there, I'm relatively new to Final Fantasy 14 - and I have just some quick questions about the way parties work for Dungeons and Instanced PvP.

So, what I understand is that a basic party is:

    1 Tank
    1 Healer
    1 Ranged DPS
    1 Melee DPS

Pretty typical set-up for MMO games.

My question is if we MUST use that exact setup for both dungeons and PvP - or if we can build our own composition. Because, I have a few buddies that I enjoy playing with in Wolve's Den / Leveling and we don't really like the idea of being limited to certain roles if we want to play together. Like, what if we want to run two tanks and two healers in duty finder; do we have that option?

Sorry for rambling a bit instead of getting right to the point. Answers are appreciated<3

Can't tell you much about pvp because I don't do it, but for instanced pve content you can use every composition you like if you enter an instance with a full premade party. It's pretty common for certain 8 man endgame-content such as trials or coil to change it up to make fights easier/faster. Examples coming into mind are doing ex primals with 1 tank/1 healer/6 dps (pretty common for Garuda/Titan ex) or 1 tank/2 healer/5 dps for coil T5 and onwards.

As far as 4-man-content goes, the duty finder will always put you into the 1/1/2 setup, though it does put 2 ranged or 2 melee dps in one party occasionally so there's no strict rule on the 1 ranged/1melee dps thing. In premade groups you can beat 4-man-content in basically every composition you like honestly because at that point there's no 4-man dungeon in the game that is not faceroll easy.

Thank you for such a thorough answer. I found much of the same information on the sub-reddit as well. At least as far as dungeons and Frontlines PvP goes I can mix it up. Just a bit bummed about the Wolve's Den situation since I enjoy traditional arena PvP more than anything in MMOs; and I like to play strange compositions.

I've tanked with Topez Carbunkle, and healed Tam Tara Deep Croft on a premade before. So we actually went in 4 DPS.
