You make a good point, however this thread is an inherently rooted in the problem your post points out as even aesthetics can be seen as "practical benefits" that will complain about (see: Cash Shop)Personally, I don't think the game should be nosing its way into our personal lives and formally glorifying our real-world relationships. Besides, not everyone has a significant other who plays FFXIV, or if they do they may not be comfortable with this virtual "marriage" nonsense. This "eternal bond" ceremony is an arbitrary, inane ritual that has nothing to do with the game at all, and is better left out.
