    Another New Player thread:

Hi,m I just started the 14 day trial yesterday.

    A) First thing, do I need to actually purchase the game first before i can use one of the recruit codes for 30 days?

    B) Secondly, My goal is to level up WHM as my first class. I enjoy playing in groups with others in previous MMO's (been playing since 97 but havent played an MMO really in the last 3-4 years). Support as healer or debuffer/cc'er are 2 of my favorite roles. Is it possible to play WHM solely through dungeons with the occasional class quests?

    C) I've read that questing is finite, and as a result would like to leave that to some of the tougher jobs to level. What would be a good 2nd job to level up in conjunction with WHM that would make good use of the quest exps?

    D) I'm on the Mid.. something sever. Is this an active server? I am a US CST player, but I'm also a stay at home dad so my play time tends to be more active around 8am-noon/2pm cst.

    Thanks.

Hi! welcome to the world of Eorzea!
A ) I'll skip this since I've been playing for a long long time before 14-day trial came in, I'm not really sure, sorry!
B ) There're many ways to level up, you can run dungeons over and over until your lv is high enough to do more quest/unlock new dungeon. but I'd suggest you to do the F.A.T.E. too since you'll need some Grand Company seals to buy a chocobo.
C ) Once you begin to level another class, you'll gain 50% exp bonus from F.A.T.E. and killing monsters(both outside and inside dungeon) so you won't need to worry much about saving quests for 2nd class and there'll be repeatable class called levequests. which use your allowance in order to accept the quest, you can check your allowance by pressing J and see the Journal window. You'll gain 6 allowance/day(max100)
D ) about server I'm not so sure either, I'm in Japanese database since I'm a Asian dude lol
    hope this help!

    Hey there!

    A) Don't know but I'm going to assume yes.

    B) You start off playing as a Conjurer then at lvl 30 you need archanist to lvl 15 to unlock WHM. Do all your class quests every 5 levels as some provide skills you can't unlock while levelling.

    C) All the jobs take the same amount of time to level, though saying that levelling a healer and tank is slightly easier because of the near instant dungeon queues. There are 2 good classes to level, thaumaturge and archanist, both have cross class skills that are very useful for WHM, swift cast (THM) and eye for an eye/virus (ARC). Those skills are unlocked before reaching lvl 50 on those classes so once you have them unlocked its up to you which one you take to 50.

    D) Not on that server so can't answer that I'm afraid :/

Hope you enjoy your time in FF14

For leveling any battle class (healers and tanks included), I'd advise taking advantage of everything the game has to offer. Hunting log, challenge log, side quests, levequests, FATEs, guildhests & dungeons (and their roulettes). I find it feels a heck of a lot less grindy if I keep doing different things. Levequests are a bit of a last resort for me, because the XP is just not that great for battle classes, and the allowances are better saved for gatherers/crafters. But I'll still do them now and then when I have allowances to burn & don't feel like the other options.

Regardless, they all level fairly quickly these days. It's just a matter of which sort of leveling you lean toward on which role. Saving quests for DPS classes isn't a bad idea, though.

Something you might consider, just for right now, is getting your CNJ up to the level of the first few dungeons, and then pausing to switch to ACN or THM. On the 28th, we're getting patch 2.4, which is bringing in Rogue as a new class (with Ninja as its job). If you like dungeons, that will be prime time to be leveling a healer, because Rogue/Ninja is going to be DPS, and everybody and their dog is going to be leveling it, which means queue times for tanks and healers are going to be even better than usual. Normally, you'll have instant queues as a healer up to level 30 (when Scholars start taking some of the healer slots), and after that they taper down to midway between DPS times and tank times. I'm guessing that bump at 30 is going to get much smaller for a while starting on Tuesday.

Tuesday is probably also going to mean a ton of Rogue/Ninjas grinding FATEs while they're waiting on dungeon queues, so it'll also be a good time to join the FATE zerg for a while, on any class.

    A) Yes, you need to buy the game. That purchase will give you 30 days of access, and during that 30 days (or any time between purchase and paying an additional subscription fee for the first time) you can put in one of those recruit codes. You only get the bonus items from that recruit code once you pay an additional subscription fee. (If paying by credit card direct to SE, you can only pay for time once you need to, so it won't be until after your initial 30 days are complete. If you pay by game time card, you can do that any time after purchase of the game.)

    B) Once you get to level 15 (where dungeons start) you could level up a particular class/job just by dungeons and one class quest each five levels. That's only if you're using another class to do the rest of the main story though. Most content in the game is unlocked either directly through the main storyline or at least requires a certain amount of the main story before you can unlock it. The main story itself alternates, with the majority of its content occurring in open-world quests, and some of it occurring in dungeon runs, so you can neither play completely solo nor completely in dungeon groups. You could, however, do the dungeon content as conjurer/white mage and the solo content as thaumaturge/black mage or some such combination if you want to.

With your first class you will have to to the Main Story questline, because most dungeons are unlocked by it

So, I started as Archer, but don't much care for it.

Can I just switch to Conjurer now that I'm level 10 with Archer, and then pick up where I left off on my main story quest once my Conjurer is 10?

    Yes you can.

There's nothing special about your starting class past level 10, except that it determines your home city, which determines which version of the main story you get before the three stories merge (around level 15).

10 posts per page is only the default setting; it is bad, and you should feel bad if you haven't changed it.

Yes, you can do the main scenario (and most other quests for that matter) with any combat class you wish, including alternating different main scenario quests with different classes. The only two things determined by which class you actually start the game with are the class you'll do for the first 10 levels (since that's when the ability to add additional classes is unlocked), and which starting city you'll be questing in for the first 15 levels.

    EDIT
Ah, Bixby beat me to the answer again. He keeps doing that. lol
