I've noticed in FFXIV that STR is worded to increase the attack power of melee attacks and DEX increases the attack power of ranged attacks. However, in practice this is not the case!
This is evident with the following abilities:
Shield Lob
Tomahawk
Piercing Talon
These abilities are specifically stated to be ranged attacks but DEX does not increase their damage. STR does because their equipped weapons gain Attack Power through STR. Mages also have Attack Power values based on their STR which goes unused except for their auto-attacks.
I suggest altering the tool-tips to the following:
STR: Increases the Attack Power for Swords, Axes, Lances, Fisticuffs, Rods, Staves and Books. Increases the amount of damage you block or parry.
DEX: Increases the Attack Power of Bows, Twinblades* and Guns*. Increases the rate in which you block or parry.
The alteration would pose no change to actual game play but would better inform players of their attacks and what their weapons need for stats. This also opens up the use for DEX as the primary melee stat for new classes which could be added such as the new Rogue (historically this type of class has been about dexterity and not brute strength) and potentially Fencer (real-world application, they are dextrous, not about brute strength).
(*: I'm running on the assumption that Guns will use DEX in similarity to ARC and that Twinblades will use DEX based on the recent .dat mining of traits. Traits can be found HERE and my rough translation can be found at the bottom of the post HERE)
