New player with a couple questions

Hello! I'm a new FFXIV player who just want to learn more about how the game works.

    1) What are some ways players use to level new classes? There aren't an endless amount of quests in the game as far as I know. I know the rogue/ninja combination is coming out soon and I'd like to try it out, but I don't know the most efficient ways to level new classes.

    2) What kind of cross-server interactions are there? Can I be friends or join a free company in other servers? What about partying and doing dungeons?

Oh and since I just started, I don't have any buddies in game. My IGN is Historikal Subraix on the Leviathan server, so feel free to add!

    1) There are many ways of leveling besides quests: running dungeons, Levequests (repeatable quests) and FATEs, Challenge Log objectives... It certainly feels more PRODUCTIVE with doing quests because the other methods can be a bit grindy, but they are there for aiding in leveling all jobs. Usually there are enough quests from each city state to help in leveling at least one job up to end game.

    2) You cannot really be friends in-game cross-server. although it is possible to party with them using duty finder. (My brother plays on Lamia, I play on Brynhildr, and once I randomly partied with someone from his free company via Duty Finder) However they do also have to be in the same Data Center, as different Data Centers are not mixed I believe.

Hello and welcome to the game historikal.

There's quite a few tricks you can use to level, but filling out your hunting log, running fates, running dungeons, and challenge quests are all viable ways to gain xp.

The majority of these features will be unlocked as you level. Be on the lookout for quests at lv10 that unlock your hunting log, guildhests and guildleves, lv.15 for challenge log, and dungeons starting fro mlv.15 on. When you reach lv.41, daily beastman quests become available and will help supplement xp gain.

These activities are particularly useful for dps classes as they may spend a lot of time waiting for dungeons and can do fates, hunting logs, and daily quests while they wait in queue.

There is little cross-server activity that you can actively organize. You may find yourself pairing with the same people for certain events such as pvp and dungeon farms, but you will be strictly limited to organizing activities with players on your own server, Leviathan.

Your name is easy enough to remember. I'll try to ring you up later tonight probably and answer any more questions in game.

For your very first class, all you need is the Hunting Log and the Main Story Line Quests. These will level you easily without touching anything else until the 40s (though you may wanna do any FATEs you run into for gil and extra EXP and later seals). You can leave ALL the sidequests for later classes to help you leveling a bit . If you are holding out for Rogue/Ninja, I suggest you get PUG to 15 and stop there until the patch comes out (oct 28), so that you have as many story missions as possible available for your Rogue/NIN. Level some gathering classes if you get bored in the meantime. You will always need the crystals you get from gathering.
Your biggest EXP gain is currently dungeons (starting at lvl 15), but as a DPS, you will have long wait times. Use these wait times to do FATEs and Hunting Log entries.
For any later classes, you will be doing a combination of dungeons and FATEs as well.

Also, the absolute only cross-server activity is Duty Finder parties, sorry. You cannot friend, blacklist or message people on other servers, nor party with them on purpose.

Well, some sidequests unlock content or features. They could still be with a different class than the one you do the main story with provided you're alternating to level both classes up near the same time, but the ones that unlock features shouldn't be put off for too long. A good listing of how different features are unlocked can be found on this wiki page. Any other sidequests, though, that are neither part of the main storyline nor listed on that unlocks wiki page, can as TheTen mentioned be put off to use while leveling later classes.

And the DPS wait is likely to be longer than ever when everyone is trying to level their new ROG/NIN. When that first comes out will be a great time for anyone wanting to level a tank or healer class to do so.
