Because a few mounts and minions on itself isn't the sole reason you're currently paying a subscription? SE employees too like to get paid at the end of the month? Investments into new game development have to be made? Server maintenance has to be covered? You know, just the basic essentials for any viable company to stay afloat?

This game was already financially successful while the company itself is not. So, is this cash shop a means to make up funds lost from other projects failures within the company?

    Always remember the Silver Rule:
"Treat others as they treat you!" ...or something like that.

How about they focus on making those games good so that they are financially successful in their own right rather than bleeding money from already loyal fans and subscribers to this game?

Perhaps to recoup their losses for FFXIV 1.0?

Welcome to corporate 101. You're understanding simple business economics. Yes, it is standard practice for financial income within game developers to be redistributed to other projects. Heck, if not other projects would never even come in to existence. The gaming market is a financially unpredictable one. And many projects get funded by cash cows.

    EA has Sims + Battlefield.
    Activision has WoW + CoD.
    Ubisoft has Assassin's Creed.
    Valve has Steam.

Square Enix has been struggling, but may now have FFXIV to fulfill this role.

Publishers which lose their cashcows? Well, they go belly-up. Just think of what happened to THQ. The Warhammer 40k series once was an important source of income to them. However, the sequel failed to generate similar revenue, and not too long after they were out of the market.

People are often quick to try and burn down publishers for having such cash cows. But if it wasn't for that, the gaming industry would be long dead. AAA titles would be impossible.

AAA titles are cancer 99% of the time, because such a large portion of that "AAA" budget goes into marketing. I wouldn't care if AAA games went the way of the dodo. Perhaps it would encourage more creativity amongst developers again.

Plenty of indie crap to be found on kickstarter, greenlit games, etc. if "creativity" is what you're looking for.

Indie games aren't very creative either most of the time. They typically just try to cash in on the whole "retro" fad.

You'd think 2.5+ million adventurers would be a sign of success, I mean everyone loves throwing around that number as a sign of how great and profitable the game is, apparently not.

Well, while I am not leaving this game because of this, I do think it is wrong of SE to take out items that would otherwise be on the market board and be seen as additional rewards for getting such a find ( and the feeling of getting something worth alot of gil). Is now shoved into the cash shop, and you can only get it if you buy it with real money.

It does hurt the game in an in-game economic way. The more this continues to happen, the more it will become and overall BIG issue.

Stuff like seasonal items/fantasia's are perfectly fine to sell on a cash shop. But not Mounts/Wind-up dolls/clothing that could otherwise be in content as rewards and people selling them on the MB.

It will become a economic issue if the cash shop becomes a "big hit".
