The cash shop is completely optional, and, in no way, provides anything outside of aesthetics. No one gains an advantage in any way, shape, or form. If you don't want to buy one of the cash shop pets or armors, you don't have to. If you find something that they implement into the cash shop to be to your liking, you can buy it. If you can't rationalize spending extra money on the game outside of your subscription fee, then don't pay a dime extra. In the words of Captain Planet; "The power is yours!"
