It's not a matter of being behind. It's a matter of the banks having adapted another system as there was no standard available. For international companies its very easy to incorporate iDEAL payments for the Dutch market as well. And the transaction rates for companies are lower than the transaction rates of e.g. credit card payments, making the incorporation of iDEAL a lucrative choice.
Many international companies DO support payments by iDEAL. Valve allows for payment with iDEAL on Steam. Blizzard allows for payments with iDEAL. Sony allows for payments with iDEAL. Electronic Arts allows for payments with iDEAL on both Origin as well as within e.g. SWTOR. Etcetera.
Square Enix is in this sense behind by having a very limited range of transaction possibilities. Despite the ease of incorporating so much more.
Our debit cards are most often Maestro yes, but they're ATM only cards. Few are VISA, same story with those though. The cards lack a credit-card like number and any real form of authentication. It's a chip only form of payment on it, with pin-code. And up to a few years ago simply an old-fashioned swipe. For online payment by card, picking up a credit card is the only real alternative. For online payment by direct transaction, iDEAL or PayPal are your options.
