It's not a matter of being behind. It's a matter of the banks having adapted another system as there was no standard available. For international companies its very easy to incorporate iDEAL payments for the Dutch market as well. And the transaction rates for companies are lower than the transaction rates of e.g. credit card payments, making the incorporation of iDEAL a lucrative choice.

Many international companies DO support payments by iDEAL. Valve allows for payment with iDEAL on Steam. Blizzard allows for payments with iDEAL. Sony allows for payments with iDEAL. Electronic Arts allows for payments with iDEAL on both Origin as well as within e.g. SWTOR. Etcetera.

Square Enix is in this sense behind by having a very limited range of transaction possibilities. Despite the ease of incorporating so much more.

Our debit cards are most often Maestro yes, but they're ATM only cards. Few are VISA, same story with those though. The cards lack a credit-card like number and any real form of authentication. It's a chip only form of payment on it, with pin-code. And up to a few years ago simply an old-fashioned swipe. For online payment by card, picking up a credit card is the only real alternative. For online payment by direct transaction, iDEAL or PayPal are your options.

That's interesting. Their website seems to say differently and even has a picture of a chipped Maestro card with the credit card numbers:

Maybe it's not available everywhere I guess?

This is the typical maestro debit card as which can be used for online payments:
    http://www.viewsonuk.com/wp-content/...stro-card1.gif

Note the credit card like number annotation, expiration date, and although can't be seen here, a similar security code on the back as with for example a mastercard.

This is however what a typical dutch debit card looks like:

Pasnummer is the debit card number, 223A456 in this example. There's no security code on the back. And due to the lacking of the required numbers, online payment with them is impossible.

There is a lot of website that offer gamecardcodes.
They will send you the code per e-mail once you have payed.

A quick google search should get you what you need

Does your country provide time cards? Your local gaming shop should sell them otherwise you can buy them on their website or amazon etc.

As long as the website you're buying it off supports iDeal :P

It's quite a refreshing change, that Dutch debit card problem is the first legitimate issue I've heard so far that could cause people to be unable to play following this sudden change to payment methods... too bad most of the people complaining don't have this problem and are just being stubborn. Feel for you, Fornix. Actually, how are you paying for it since you can't use Paypal atm?

Why have you quoted me o0? The game time cards I am referring too are the official time cards that you purchase in video game stores (much like you would wow cards etc) and the website I'm referring too would be the site that belongs to your gaming store. For example, I have a GAME store where I live, if I can't purchase the time cards there I would visit GAME's online retail store. Amazon sell the exact same cards.

If this is about online purchasing being the issue I don't know much about it but just buying in store would hopefully solve this problem.

You did mention buying online which is what I was responding to... the conversation has moved to being unable to use debit cards online.

It has already been mentioned that shops selling gametime cards are hard to find in the region.

It's still not impossible for Dutch players though. There's plenty of Dutch webshops from which you can buy timecards in case local shops don't sell it anymore. It's merely a hassle, as often you'll have to deal with delivery costs or increased prices over online subscription. There's always the factor of delay, shipping after all takes at least 24 hours. And delivery by the national postal service is not done on Sunday and Monday in many regions. So if you realize on Saturday morning that your subscription is running out that day, at best you'll have a gametime card on Tuesday as physical delivery.

There are some digital resellers, code by e-mail, etc. However my own experience with them is poor. I'd avoid it like the plague. Often there is a very low service standard. In case an e-mail is not sent out it tends to take several days prior to getting a response by e-mail. Contact by phone is often very poorly possible, simply either unanswered or a complete lack of interest. And with such a great deal of shady dealers out there selling stolen codes or reselling codes it's not unlikely to run into notices along the lines of "This code has already been entered".

But even though not impossible, it remains very consumer unfriendly to limit payment options to such an extent. For many more casual oriented players the hassle of dealing with timecards, delivery, etc may simply not be worth the return.

If physical cards and debit cards are an issue looks like you'd just need to go to your bank and directly ask them "I need to use these services <list of payment options SE accepts> are there any cards that work with these" and just going along from there.
