Hopefully they'll start selling raids soon so they'll have more money to develop them and they'll be much better than Coil now... right?

They did and it's ridiculous. There are loads of theories as to why they're doing this, mine is that WoD is the last level increase expansion, they were betting on Project Titan (which they lost to Bungie (Destiny)) and this is their "screw it!" moment. Prior to the WoD announcement though, their cash shop was pretty much the way I hope SE's is in terms of content offered.
Right, because Raids are a vanity item.

With cash shop we are getting to the state when paying subscription doesnt give us full access to the game content (everything ingame is content, even vanity items) so I think that gating raids behind money wall is ok. It is SE's right to give us only the content they think we deserve. /sarcasm off

You guys talking about experience, because you say other companies do it too. Can you name one major MMORPG that had a cash shop and added pay to win things?
Blizzard and adding "boost to 90" after almost 10 years does not count. It is not a pay to win function, but a smart addition to attract new players to the game. They know very well none is going to level 1 to 90 to catch up with their friends before the new expansion.
After all those years Blizzard only has a few mounts, a few minions, a few fun gear items and the boost to 90. If Blizzard can handle it without going nuts I am sure Square Enix can.
FFXIV will never add pay to win stuff and if you are really worried so much about a few minions and a mount I would say grow up already ....

Blizzard is also testing out xp pots and some kind of pvp point pot boost i think it was. There is a link in the earlier pages to the article from blizzard. You guys talking about experience, because you say other companies do it too. Pretty much how predictions work. You see how the trend have been in the past, then apply that to the future. And unless you are using untrue basis, the predictions have a high possibility of coming true.so basically what you say is : The player fear for the feature of the game & they come to the conclusion & assumption the game will be like this or that game make by this or that company & host by another this or that company. It is still assumption.

It was posted several times on this thread so I won´t type it all again....so here come all my copy-pastes
To be fair most don't start with P2W items, they start with vanity only, and they keep adding and adding more vanity.
Most stay with vanity only.Age of Conan, DC Universe, Aion, Rift, Tera, SW:TOR, Dungeons & Dragons Online, Star Trek Online, LotR....there are plenty of examples...
Edit: and before you ask, yes, all those games introduced their cash shop before going F2P and it drove ppl away from the game....cash shop alone was not the cause for people to leave but it certainly helped.
But it usually raises 2 questions:
- It can be used as a "sort of RMT"...buy an item in the cash shop, sell it in-game for million gils (crafters already do, but at least they put some work into it).
- It depends on what each person definition of "win" is...to some is to down SCoB, to other could be collect all minions/costumes/mounts.
But there has been cases of game affecting items:
As for the doom assumption:Rift added "special editions mounts" back when it was P2P, it was a re-skin of the faster mount in game, ppl was mad since you didn't have to get it/pay it with in game money.
Aion started with weapons skins back in 1.8 (lightsaber skin for swords, popsicle skin for mace) etc, then in 2.0 they added the "socketing success supplements" (permanet item in the store) and "100% socketing success supplements" (timed offer, they sold those for 1 week IIRC) for manastone socketing when it was still P2P. that was their field test that they could include game changing items to the store.
Then on the other hand, you have the "legit RMT" it can create, I remember ppl buying the lightsaber skin on the store and then selling it in-game for millions.
It's true as you say the games had other issues, that's why I said the cash shops weren't the only reason ppl left, but "another" reason people left....and if you are losing ppl the least you want to do is give them more motives to leave.
One can truly hope they will not go down this road with FF XIV cash shop...problem is trying to cope with what you hope for and what history of the MMORPG genre tells us...
And last but not least:
I don't know how long everyone here has been into MMORPGs gaming, maybe to some ppl this is their first MMO, or maybe they just played WoW/XI.
People making assumptions here of what will happen are not doing so because they are wicked or evil or hate SE....they are doing them because they've seen the exact same things before, argument and defenders saying "no way that's going to happen" happen in countles other AAA MMOs for the past decade.

Very nicely written.
I also want to add that, for all that I have written on this topic, I really do believe that this team, the FFXIV:ARR team, would be the ones to listen and act on the feedback more than any I have seen. That alone is reason for me to post my dissatisfaction with the Cash Shop idea and I doubt I'm alone in that. We care about the game, particularly the long vision for it. That's why we fight so hard for the stance.
Ironically - People who keep saying "It will happen" must secretly be stating that ARR is going F2P and has failed..because most "P2W cash shops" happen when a P2P MMO fails and need to relaunch as F2P...
So if no one is saying that, as someone will no doubt argue, why do people keep arguing what happens in F2P MMOs will happen here?

I am seriously curious about what people are scared about. Can you give a few examples of items that might brake it?
