It is possible to play without crafters, using NPCs to repair gear and buying what you need off the auction house. So, do not feel that you MUST have crafters leveled.

That said, if crafting appeals to you, then I encourage you to pursue leveling them!

Probably is possible but making enough money to continually buy gear seems like it would be really difficult. Without my crafting classes, I would be one broke SOB.

Nope. As mentioned, for your first class, so long as you go out of your way to do sidequests in each area you'll get lots of free gear. You'll get a weapon upgrade every fifth level from your class quests up to 30, and even then there's upgrades you can get from other classes up there; you'll also get get choices of appropriate gear from sidequests in each level-relevant area, as well as level-50-ready gear from your final job quests. The only things you might be buying from players or NPCs are accessories as there's fewer of them going around (assuming you don't get any as dungeon drops).

Remember to pick up the Challenge Log at 15 too, it gives a lot of free gold and EXP just as you play the game; doing Duty Roulettes once they're available too can help a lot.
