    The Location Names thread

So Fernhawles just said on the stream that each area has its own story behind it, so I thought, why not make a thread?

So, I've often wondered why Revenant's Toll is called, well Rev's Toll.

Can't think of any other places off the top of my head atm.

My guess is that "toll" refers to the meaning as the ring of a bell, and with revenant meaning in oversimplified terms a visible ghost, it could be related to some imagery of ceremoniously ringing a bell for the dead in such a forsaken land as Mor Dhona, or maybe a darker alternative would be people claim to have been set upon by revenants after hearing a bell.

There's actually an NPC in Revenant's Toll that explains its name. I'll let you go find the answer yourself, cause it's more fun that way.

This one is already in the game! Alison at Mor Dhona (22,6) just up the hill from the Aetheryte says:

Alison: Well met, friend, and welcome to Revenant's Toll. Is there aught you wish to know?
Alison: This facility was established under the auspices of the Adventurers' Guild. It used to be situated a short distance to the west, but the Calamity laid the original camp to waste.
Alison: When the reconstruction of aetheryte camps began across Eorzea, it was decided that Revenant's Toll would be relocated to where we now stand.
Alison: Ah, mayhap you wonder where the camp got its name. Well, some years before the Sixth Astral Era ended, an imperial airship fell from the skies and crashed here.
Alison: The impact was such that an entire settlement was annihilated in the blink of an eye. When the camp was built, it was named in remembrance of those poor souls who died in the tragedy.

    Edit: ninja'd above

Edit 2 to avoid double post:

The name that I would really like an explanation for is the Eighty Sins of Sasamo

If I remember rightly, Ferne hinted a while ago that the Eighty Sins of Sasamo was named after a past Sultan of Ul'dah, and was a result of a 'cruel and unusual punishment' vested upon said sultan for an unexplained crime. I can't remember the details, but it was mentioned in a previous thread here in the Lore forum, so I'll try searching it out.

I remembered from somewhere that Sasamo was a Sultan but that was it. Thanks Enki I'll look for the thread myself.

    Edit:
    Ah found it

Now I'm starting to wonder if the Syndicate will ry to frame Nanamo as the new "Sasamo"...

And I just realized they even have similar names!

On topic, I'd like to find out more about Halatali, Satasha and Highbridge

Highbridge is pretty self explanatory I think. Can you even SEE the bottom of the gorge it crosses? It's also built up higher than the land around it on the one side since the canyon sides aren't even with one another.

Yeah, Highbridge is very much self-explanatory (it's literally a high bridge that crosses a gorge). Mundane I know.

As for Sastasha, it's anyone's guess, but the dungeon itself is actually an amalgamation of three separate open dungeons from version 1.0 (Sopshae, Mistbeard Cove and Cassiopeia Hollow), so it's possible it could share a common name origin. Halatali I presume is taken from ancient lalafellian (possibly Bel'ahdian?) who were the ones who built the place originally.

I can shed a little light on Sastasha, though it's not much. Both it and the Sposhae mentioned by Enki have been mentioned by Ferne to be from the Sahagin language, where the words are meant to evoke trying to speak under water. As far as what those words mean in the Sahagin language your guess is as good as mine.
