I like it! I also like the espers from ff6, they have a lot of story potential. There is so much content to draw from and so much new stuff to go. I love this game

Well as I said early but I have a wish list for my class: Replace Tri-Disaster to act like Contagion.
Garuda - AoE pet
Wicked Wheel - main AoE attack
Razor Plume - AoE DoT attack. Wind Burn maybe?
Slipstream - AoE push back
Minstrel Shriek - AoE attack
Aerial Blast - nuff' said
Ifrit - Single Target
Crimson Cyclone - remove stun!
Burning Strike - same
Radiant Shield - Delivers an attack with a potency of 50 every time physical and magic damage is suffered for 20
Flaming Crush - DoT
Inferno - same
Titan - Emergency Tank
Rock Buster - same
Mountain Buster - same
Earthen Ward - same
Tumult - Provoke
Earthen Fury - same
As for the new Egi (Shiva, Ramuh, & Leviathan). I don't want them to replace the current ones like carby got replaced. We do have a need for burst damage attack on occasions so why not go with the old tradition of attack and release. I think the theme would be pseudo cinematic and flashy but not over board.
Shiva could maybe go up the enemy, double slap, then use diamond dust for nice bind spell with low DoT called freeze.
Ramuh paralysis with damage
Leviathan Tidal wave that does something extra

First things first, I am kind of confused about your post, at first you start out talking about the functionality of the job, fending for yourself, being useful in parties, ect. Then you turn around and post a picture of the summon, and the thing that confuses me is what does the aesthetics have to do with your functionality? SMN being DoT class with a summon makes SMN one of the most functional job in the game. While everyone is running around dodging mechanics losing uptime on a boss there you are still doing 95% of your job without having to cast a spell for the moment, especially while you have ruin 2 and fester which are two instant casts you can perform while running. Don't try to hook people in with a complaint about the functionality of a job just to complain about how it looks. Secondly the reason for the looks of the summons is HEAVILY described in the lore of the job and it makes perfect sense when broken down the way it is. Nothing is changing, at least not for a long time and SMN is just fine the way it is.So ive been playing for a while and i played FFXI for 8 years, ive started to come to a conclusion that FFXIV summoner, really, reallly blows...
i am very dissapointed, i must admit.
i was very much looking forward to being a summoner again, it was my most favourite job in FFXI, i was able to fend for myself, level myself on my own and more, i enjoyed being a good asset in a party and out of one also.
what is my problem with FFXIV version of summoner?
well this image sums up one of the issues, it really does.
yes SE, WTH HAPPENED!?
this was most disheartening thing
as much as the egis are kinda cute, i just, i cant, i feel like this is a step back.
will we be getting some kind of upgrade from this?
(please say yes!)
because, right now, i dont have that summoner feeling, the egi's are the equiv. of, well ... FFXI Spirits ... and every summoner knows how "amazing" they are (sarcasm!)

Honestly I'm not a huge fan of the "image" of SMN and countless people I've talked to aren't fans either. They are however, fine with the playstyle. SCH I feel is fine when it comes to image, the fairies feel perfect in size and overall visuals. However, to people that may be drawn to the game from the title of "Final Fantasy" to play as SMN it can be jarring. I do have to say I have a few friends that wanted to play SMN but are completely put off by the Egis. I didnt mind it at first, but the more and more I played SMN the more I detested it mainly due to egis, to the point that I don't feel SMN is for me anymore. A game like Final Fantasy where SMN is synonymous with *Flash Boom Bang*, that combined with it being a pretty flashy mmoRPG, visuals and aesthetics matter quite a bit to a lot of people and many expect alot more in the *Flashy* department.
Trust and believe when I say I completely understand the lore of FFXIV and blah blah blah, but it doesn't mean I or anyone else has to like it, nor does it always have to remain that way. Lore can evolve over time aka SMNs getting stronger, learning different methods of summoning, etc. Myself and most (sane) people that I've discussed this with would have no problem with a Miqote/Hyur sized avatar that looked at least close to the actual primal. Honestly I'd be happy with just regular elementals/sprites if I could instead of egis even if it was only cosmetic (hell give me back Carbuncle and I will forever shut up on this subject: dead serious). Not everyone offering feedback (or complaining) wants huge, oversized primals. No I won't quit the game over it and I might pick SMN back up every once in a while to solo something, but as a main I'm done with it. Gearing alt jobs, but not coming back to SMN main unless something changes.

I seriously don't comprehend quitting a job for its looks and not its functionality. More power to you, but I just can't understand it at all. But this is coming from someone who doesn't care about graphics of anything, all I care about is substance. Summoner wasn't what I expected but that won't stop me from enjoying it

@Lethorian
If you read everything, the asthetics was only part of it. yeah id like summoner to look more like a summoner, but that i can get over if they fixed other issues.
My summon has and sometimes still does, teleport randomly and attack when not being told to, im not sure why this is, it doesnt happen all the time, but when it does, its noticable.
or how about the fact that my pet is only 1/3rd the jobs damage, ONE BLOODY 3RD, thats pathetic, summoner is about the summon, so can we please make the job about the summon and the main focus BE the summon, just saying, my pet should be doing more.
@dday3six
actually many other games and other FF games present DRK as a job that wields a Scythe or AT LEAST a Great Sword.
id prefer they give DRK a Scythe however as it makes it stand out
@ZeratoTyrael
i love you, yes, id like carby back, carby made me feel like a summoner, red floaty elemental does not.
i will most likely, like you, not play smn as a main for a long while

Just like summoner, your view on the drk is based off FFXI, drk traditionally uses "dark blades" in contrast to the paladin. Think Cecil. I believe the only other game that had drk be a 2 handed was X-2. The drk signature is Soul Eater, not scythes.

It is because you are Miqo'te and not Ascian. You are not ready for dat powah!

SMN just need more abilites that interact with the pet. I think DoTs+pet work well because FFXIV is way more fast paced then FFXI so the summoner himself needs to be able to do something other then just issuing some orders to the pet.
I agree that egis should have the size they have on the job trial quests, I'm not sure why they aren't like that.
What SMNs really need is a revamp on pet skills though. Ifrit is still somwhat useless and Contagion needs to become a SMN skill or otherwise Levi and Ramuh-egi will also have no chance to stay competitive.
Egis are they size they are so they do interfere with the field of view for other players. Many players set party battle effects to show some, so they can still see Sacred Soil, but not other things. For instance, I'd have trouble in Turn 8 finding the sweet spot for Brainjack if the Black Mage's Blizzard 3 hits around the same time, were it not for that setting. If egis were bigger, referring still to the Turn 8 encounter., it might make the Homing Missle line harder to find, for example.
I would also note that while Contagion should probably be a Summoner skill. (My vote would be to have it replace Tri-Disaster). Garuda is still likely to be favored simply because she avoids Boss Aoes by being at range.
