If add-ons cant be used by all players then its cheating.
Very few games these days are restricted to consoles, and more and more are being ported to PC.
Take 13 for example. A test run to see how many people would actually play FF on the PC. And with that data, they're going to put XV on PC.

I want addons really bad for UI tweaks and RP addons, such as character profiles, IC/OOC flags, etc.
Well at least your all arguing for your cause in spirit.
The obvious problem is that once you open Pandora's box, it can't be closed.
There are any number of things that could go horribly wrong. I think this possibility is being highly ignored.
As for the UI, it would be easier if SE just added it themselves in a update rather than adding the requirement of an add-on.
The logistical problems would be a concern as well.
My opinion-
I personally think add ons should stay away form this game, and I stated that when they first announced it.
If add ons come I will most likely leave to something else. I think its bad enough we have to use light and hunting sites.
Adding dps meters will just create further strife, anyone doubting this is just ignoring past evidence.
As for the crafting, well a little organization goes a long way.

Not entirely, there's been a little discussion about it in previous pages. For example, I would be OK with a read only API, and even if it's not read only, I definitely wouldn't want to see WoW-like healbotting. Also has been mentioned... healers and crafters (and people with tons of geared jobs) has been asking for UI accommodations since not long after release. The only healer topic SE has ever responded to, however, was the benediction animation one (and that was 'working as intended'). We can't count on SE to make these adjustments.
From a UI design perspective, there's also the problem of adding features that benefit one group, but only add complexity or clutter for another group. Allowing customization means much better QoL for people that can use it, while avoiding slightly worse QoL for people that don't.
Moreover, I don't think an overabundance of caution is a good reason to sink a feature with so much utility. We can learn from WoW's mistakes and do things better.

Only addons I really miss:
Customizable buff/debuff symbols
DoT timers
Some kind of power auras incl audio signal when a proc occurrs.
I REALLY don't want to have to look to my buttons whether there is some golden border or not.
Rearranging information the game ALREADY PROVIDES according to my personal comfort is NOT cheating.
