When we eventually get more storyline characters, It would be fun being
able to build a bond with a certain one you like and summon them to fight
alongside you. Theyd have their own special abilities and such.

I would be content to use them as the NPCs in my house as opposed to the standard menders and junk mongers.
Fair point that having the companions be unique in appearance would add to the immersion.
Something akin to SWTOR's companion-type system would be awesome.
I think I'd most prefer if the Path Companions were unique from your typical player-created characters or NPC's somehow... but I'd be okay settling with the average if we just had them!

You'd need to give them some sort of story without being overbearing the way it was in 1.0 (since the path companion was connected to someone from the ala mighan resistance and had personal reasons for getting involved with you).
* The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
* Design ideas:
Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)
If in return I can send my chocobo out to gather. I'm pretty sure that fat bird ought to be able to catch fish just as well after all.
