Roegadyn Hellsgaurd Lore

There doesn't seem to be a lot about them. How does the clan structure work? Male and Female roles? are there any? There are so few Hellsgaurd throughout the game itself NPC wise, its difficult to gauge any of this without them interacting with eachother.

Well, the reason for the lack of info mentioned in game about the Hellsguard could be because like the Duskwight for the elezen they're considered a racial 'offshoot' snubbed by the 'proper' members of their race - the Hellsguard eschewed the maritime life of their Sea Wolf kin and settled in the mountains of Xephlatol, becoming mercenaries and sellswords (think Mandalorians from the Star Wars universe). Version 1.0's manual actually stated that their population in Eorzea is actually very low, so it therefore wouldn't be unexpected that their insular warrior culture is somewhat mysterious to outsiders. In fact, it's likely the WAR Job itself comes from the Hellsguard tribe, as the WAR Job NPC is clearly a Hellsguard.

You will find the "old language" used in a lot of Sea Wolf names, as the Sea Wolves tend to adhere to the ancient traditions and customs the northern islands from which they hail. The Hellsguard, on the other hand, are more prone to adapt to their surroundings, and often choose to 'translate' their names from the old language to modern Eorzean. That said, the lines between the two clans aren't set in stone, and you will find some Hellsguard have chosen to use the old language in their names, and some Sea Wolves have given themselves "translated" names.

Male

Male names are formed from two words (usually a descriptor and a noun), and tend to draw heavily from nature, whether it be vegetable or animal, inanimate or animate, abstract or concrete.

Female

Female Hellsguard names follow the same rules as those for male names. In addition, there are no restrictions on the second word (as exist in Sea Wolf forenames). The only real difference between male and female Hellsguard names is that the latter tend to include plant imagery (though there are many which do not). On the other hand, the use of trees, flowers, etc. is not exclusive to female names, as there are also many male names which incorporate them.

Surnames

Highly independent in nature, Hellsguard despise being defined by the actions of anyone but themselves, and therefore those who leave their mountain homes for the city-states of Eorzea, will often completely drop their family names, choosing only to be referred to by their first.

A little more Lore for the Hellsguard, they live in the northern mountains (a lot of volcanoes) and they consider these places holy. They were also able to (after a while) learn to use magic in their mountainous homes. As Enkidoh stated its clear Curious Gorge was one of these Hellsguard Roegs, as was his brother of course.

Haha just last week i stalked prof moose about where we [hellsguard] comes from. He immidiately point to the vocano on the world map. Which is far upper left corner there are some erozean text... so the lore i remember about our cute puppy black nose tip is because vocano's ash...some kinda protection.
And lots hellsguard are merchants, so lot hellsguards are in ul'dah. and one of the richest SIX is the hellsguard [who vote against taking refugees from mission v2.2]
