sorry I'm so late to the party, but wanted to say I read the whole post earlier today ( you know, when it was like 6 pages long?) and wanted to say that this proposal is brilliant, and I hope that SE is considering this idea

Personaly i would hate changes to current suystem. I love it. I generally love sandbox system without ANY classes. Give me just skill and points to use them somehow and thats what i prefere. Current system is nice tho. In my opinion, its not class that should specialise , but a player. I would love to see current system expanded ( 1 handed axes for marudre so you can use shield too, for example) more classes and so on, but i hate predefined narrow, hyperspecialised classes. For my MMO gaming history ( from about 2002) i spent most of my time making wacky build characters just to breeak from those. If you played Ragnark, than example of those are AGI battlepriest, AGI autoatack sage and so on. It might be my personality, but i hate to be forced to do something as everyone else.
We might face an issue of weapons... as someone specializes from lets say Pugilist to Thief he will have to start using different weapon set and kinda start over with leveling the weapon and pretty much a total different way of playing. But still your suggestion is close to be a great solution. Because a mixed class like conjurer can have three talent trees of Black Mage, White Mage and Red mage? But then we have got to another issue that is when a new class gets in action like SMN and BLU, you cant fit it under any of the current classes ... and even if you made it alone yo uhave to also make 3 trees for it like the rest, and I cant see that working for a class like SMN
To the OP, good work for your idea and posting it in an understandable and structured post.
At first, I really liked your idea and after going through the 36 pages of replies, I have to say I prefer the FFT unlock way. I mean with your way of doing it, a gladiator could only become a PLD/DRK. With the FFT unlock way, let's say you unlock two new classes and they start at R1, when you get these classes to R20 you could unlock new classes from new classes. Not sure if I'm wording that clearly!
Also I don't think they should remove the ability to equip other disciplines skills. There are already a few abilities on each discipline that are unique to these discipline. What they should do is improve the penalty for equipping DoM abilities on a DoW (i.e: Sacrifice II on Pugilist). The armoury system is great imo, because it allows the player to really customize their character. Personnaly, I don't care about theory crafting and being "maxed out" like I used to when playing WoW. I play to have fun. If they restrain me from trying a lot of different combinations, I won't have as much fun as I could have trying all kind of different setups.
I know some of you really want to be the best DD/tank/healer/support/etc... and will look at spreadsheets and TC but until they really introduce challenging content in FFXIV, this is kinda pointless. Also with the FFT unlock way, they could have so many different disciplines that you would see a lot of different tanks/DD/healer/support/etc... As for the weapon = class, they would need to find a way to deal with that as a RDM/BLU I want to be able to use sword.
Again, great job with your post. A lot of people were able to give their opinion and I hope SE takes a look at this post and also that it's what they had in mind for future updates.
I love this idea. It is honestly how imagined that Square was going to create FFXIV from day 1. I hope they can still do it!
Yes thats correct. Although you would not be locked into those classes. You still have the freedom to redo your talent points and spend them on a different advanced class for that base class.
Let's say your PUG was specced into a 50 MNK and you decided you wanted to play NIN instead. Assuming you have done the quest for NIN you would simply remove your talent points. When you remove all your points your stats go down to what they would be for 50 base PUG and your MNK specific traits/abilities will be unequipped. You then put those points into NIN and you can then play a 50 NIN.
It sounds weird if you're coming from FFXI only but this is standard fair for anyone thats played another MMO, namely WoW. Don't think of it as playing a different class altogether. You're taking your base class and changing your role. Your role in this case is NIN (tank).
Thanks for the kind comments all
The ranking up of several different classes to "unlock" advanced classes idea I like. But as Speeral stated, I hope they do something kind of different than talent trees.
Also would like to mention that I'm a fan of FFXI's merit point system
While I think the thought is in the right place, I think there should be no "advanced class". There should simply be jobs and disciplines which pour into one another to fill the player's desired mold for a character. As such, I think the job system should only feature what used to be "advanced" jobs for the job system, because jobs should be an ADVANCED FEATURE. The player obtains their jobs by progressing in the game to a point where they can properly access the armory system's needs. Instead of White Mages, the "job" which combines whack n' cast healing should be the Devout. The "nuke" should probably be an Elementalist or Magus. Red Mages should probably be Sorcerers, not to betray the classic flavor of FF, but to enrich the game upon the crannies of it's lore as opposed to the troupes of it's title.
I'm not opposed to "traits", but skill trees, I am, but that's been addressed several times before.
Also.... YES, PLEASE CROWN THIS... This thread has alot of excellent player resources in it

Just please no talent trees, it wreaks of almost every other MMO on the market and they are bloody annoying and over done. I know SE has more class then doing a talent tree system.
yes cause all the original ideas that SE has come up with so far has made this game a mega smash hit and super fun game!?
I think what Kuro mentioned is something SE can work on and it works with the FF Lore anyways. Would love to see something like a talent tree that can lead a base class to be something totally different
I really like this idea. It is simple and encourages people to choose to level their job because they like it, rather than because it gives them an ability.
My only concern with this idea is that a class-specific system makes it hard on some of the more specialized classes to solo. This is why I believe they tried the multiple-class abilities approach, but I think we all realized that it takes too much away from enjoying the job you're playing and made leveling into a giant ability grab. All I am wondering is if anybody has ideas on how to make Kuro's system more enjoyable/easier for solo players?
One of my initial thoughts was to just encourage duo play rather than to keep the emphasis on solo play. I feel like duos are easy to create for casual players and they encourage making friends, which is what develops a strong MMO community.
