I like the idea. Though, I would think you shouldn't be able to earn talent points as, say MNK, then be able to reinvest them into the NIN spec, without ever touching NIN. If this were to be considered, I'd like to see that you'd actually have to "level" each spec to earn its own respective talent points, or to unlock tiers that you can invest in. Otherwise, from a character-development standpoint, it doesn't make sense that you could be a master at something you've never trained for.

Thats why you impose a minimum amount of points per spec before branching out. You also impose a minimum amount of points for moving further into the tree.
This way you wont have your MNK stealing a high-end ability or trait from NIN.
Either way is fine, if you have to level that spec for its own talent or if you're same level as the base class. End results are identical.
Not too bad, but I was thinking of something similar to the sphere grid myself. Take BLM for example where you start in the middle and it branches out in a few paths. One path for each element, then some for JAs, or maybe a mix. Here's an idea I had for an FF12 style License Board:

I like this concept as well, and I support it. I hope the development team will check it out, but one thing. Instead of getting the option to choose a class at rank 30, lower it to 25, or even 20. That way the next half of leveling you can be your "actual" class. I love the talent tree idea, if you don't want to copy. Make something unique, do something similar to FFVII's Materia system, but make it tailor more to the MMO market. This is a great suggestion!
I agree completely with Lv20. I just didn't want to step over the current Rank 20 quests for disciplines and leave people wiggle room with abilities that could be use cross-class.. Though I'm not helping my argument much when I say that the cut off for those abilities should be 20 in the OP. I'd say the cut off should be at the same rank that the Advanced Classes are introduced.
While I was in favor of unlocking classes FFT style I think this is an excellent idea. Good job OP.
Brilliant idea mate,
I haven't finished reading through it completely, I'm an impatient one when I have thoughts come into my mind so here's a quick idea I'd like to add if you didn't already:
Since we all have guilds for current classes and such, and they've yet to release that big castle city, I'd say throw all the main class guilds in that place.
Great Idea! Very well thought out. Pretty similar to what i have been thinking if not better. I support this completely and just in case something like this does happen im about to start leveling my lancer lol.

Agree with OP, though there should always be the option to play any spec the same way you can switch classes now.
