    Elemental Materias, rework idea?

    Inetead of having element materias give "element" resistance on the weapons, how about changing those stats to Potency on the weapons, so they do extra damage, and giving them more flavour?

    I have yet to find even the most obscure use for element materias outside of Spiritbonding or Transmutation, so why not do something to increase your damage ever slightly more?

    In a more detailed note, this is what I mean

    Let's use Paladin's Thundercloud as an example.

    Instead of having Lightning Resistance +14, it would have "Lightning Potency +14", and I don't mean exclusively Lightning aspected abilities like Thunder, but what it would do is, per example, the effect of Paladin's Sword Oath that adds a +50 potency every auto attack, exactly that, only the difference being that the potency affects also during skills. After all, Casters dont directly attack enemies, thus it would render them obsolete if they only affected Auto Attacks.

    This doesnt mean make a separate materia, but the materia would change the attributed effect depending on where the meld is going to be, as in Main Hand/Off Hand or armor/acessory.

    Determination tho, doesnt affect this kind of potency, but critical damage would.

    What would you think of this idea?

    Considering a potency buff of just 20 to BLM skills made their DPS jump something like 10-15% your idea would be game breaking and make melds utterly overpowered.

    I dont play BLM so I wouldnt know how big it would be, but i guess potency uses a different damage formula than I thought.

    Originally, I thought that the element potency wasnt going to be affected by other skills that increase dps, all it would be affected by would be Critical, like say

    Fire III = 300 + 20 (Fire Potency)
    Fire III + Raging Strikes = 360 + 20 (Fire Potency)
    Fire III (Crit) = 450 + 30
    Fire 3 + Raging Strikes (Crit) = 490 + 30

    (note: I dont use BLM, the numbers here are merely for example)

    Make some insane gear with maxed melds of Lightning Resistance Materia and go take on Ramuh Extreme. That's their use. Will anyone do that though? I'm sure someone has. Will I? I've thought about it...

    the only trouble is the best gear in the game doesn't allow melds...so.
