I've got mine doing field explorations right now basically for the exp. Once his ilvl is up enough, the quick ventures seem to be where all the good stuff is coming from. If you want anything decent, that's what you should try. Around Ilvl 80+ and quick ventures.

The field explorations are nice for quick exp, and for overnight venturing if you make use of the limited drop pools. Beyond that, just use either of the other two venture types.

I swear my retainers do nothing except B & E, and shoplift. They consistently bring me crappy furniture, or measly food items are normally bought from a vendor.
They probably sit around 95% of the time with a bong and a big bag of weed.

If they're only meant for leveling, why are field exploration XI-XIV only available at max level? And they only bring back things like 2 HQ hippogryph skins.
