I think every developer who wants to introduce a summoner class in their mmorpg, should take a good look at Aion Online. Aion Online might have failed as a P2P, but the summons and their transformation is one of the best things that they did.

Might be a good idea to take a look at Blade and Soul aswell, the summons there (kitties) have the same emotion as the player characters and they react to the player. A fine example, if you dance, they will dance with you, you cheer, they cheer. If your sad, they will come and comfort you, the same is when your summoning them, they will show up and crawl on to your side, like real life cats.
