Well, I've been around since before free trials, too, but I do know that even if you have an account, buying a second copy to get access from a different platform (e.g. someone with PS4 version buying the PC version or vice-versa) grants another free month added to your subscription. So it's not completely tied to occurring when the account is first created. They should get a month with each game purchase.
