    SE rotates summons in and out of their rosters all the time. It's nothing to get your panties in a bunch over. Fenrir's just a boss this time. So what? It's not a travesty; this game just isn't his place to shine, as it occasionally has in others.

    I was actually a little irritated that SE kept the six central summons the same as in FFXI, when they could have changed things up and maybe given some of their past neglected summons a chance in the limelight. I was mollified somewhat by the fact that they make the Primals so awesome and badass, but not completely.

    Still holding out hope that Alexander will make an appearance in a significant role, since he's my fave, but he's had lots of opportunities to take a starring role in pass FF games, so I won't weep bitter tears if he doesn't make it in to this installment.

    -sees complaint that Fenrir is a dungeon boss in FFXIV ARR-

    I've been playing Final Fantasy since I convinced my parents to buy the Big Red Nintendo Power book, then I convinced them to buy the game. I played the Fanlations of 2, 3 and 5. I skipped XI since I was told it was an elitist douche factory. A stereotype that these forums unsurprisingly reinforce with regularity. Fenrir was never a big name in any of the games that I played. When it appeared it was a throwaway enemy or a mediocre summon. So, yeah, get over it.

    so far all of the primals have had an element attached to them, even if in FFXIV there is no elemental wheel (lame).

    Titan --> earth, etc.

    I would expect that the next 2 primals would be light and dark. We have fire, ice, wind, earth, water, lightning. What else is missing from the iconic "elements" of FF?

    Umbral and astral are the light and dark in FFXIV. They mentioned a dark crystal in the main scenario as well.

    Kinda funny that it is only the FFXI players complaining.

    It looks to me that they're closer to the FFVI version of Fenrir though making him ice-based is a FFXIV twist to him. The super powered version of Fenrir is only in XI and holds just as much weight as FFVI does alone. Magitek came from FFVI too so why not use something close to FFVI version of Fenrir to have him in the game rather than not at all.

    I still want a Phantom Train I can suplex though :P

    In all fairness, as far as douchebaggery goes, FFXI got off a lot easier than most MMOs. That's not to say that there weren't elitist jerks a-plenty, but if you can tolerate the negativity and elitism in FFXIV, FFXI would be a breath of fresh air for you.

    As for WHY it had a typically more mature audience, I can't really say, though I've heard many theories. Some say its because it takes (or used to take) so long to do anything worthwhile, ADHD spazzes tend to lose interest quickly and so don't clutter up the population with their juvenile antics.

    Instances generally required gathering trigger items that were difficult or time-consuming to obtain, so once you actually got into an instance, everyone gave it their all; if someone wasn't satisfied with the performance of their party, they couldn't just drop out and pop back in with a new party, they had to make do with what they had.

    And folks worked HARD to keep from getting known as slackers - since there was no cross-server instancing, the people you party with were all on your server, and if word of your suckiness got around, you'd get a server rep that's hard to shake. It was virtually impossible to sneak into a party for a carry - or, at least, not more than a few times before folks started to catch on.

    Don't take this to mean that it was a paradise; elitism still had a firm presence, and even non-elite players frowned upon folks showing up with oddball gear or mainjob / subjob combinations. But from what I've heard of WoW, and what I've SEEN of this game, it wasn't nearly as bad.
