While it is true that we are playing what is called a "Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game", or "MMO" for short, many people do not play the roles of their characters and instead play the game as designed.

What Roleplayers do is put themselves in the roles of their characters, speaking as if the players were their characters.

A typical MMO player might say "LFG AV Run! PST!"

A Roleplayer looking for the same thing may instead say, "Attention! I request the assistance of some fellow adventurers in braving the treacherous depths of the Aurum Vale to discover the whereabouts of missing miners! Who's with me!?"

Roleplayers are more akin to actors in a performance than an audience to be catered to exclusively by the game. Many roleplayers put on player-run special events in the game, the housing system has allowed for a number of unique shops, bars, or other hangout locations to be accessible beyond the Adventurer's Guilds, and I am sure there will be much more on the way.

In my opinion, Roleplayers are often the foundation of any MMORPG, as they often have the most time and energy devoted to the game, not only playing these roles of their characters, but also trying to play the actual game as well. Sometimes, the developers of an MMORPG have even watched their roleplaying community carefully and have adopted unexplained aspects of the game's lore invented by that community as canon. Being a roleplayer in an MMORPG is something that, I feel, causes an MMORPG to be a lot more enjoyable for that reason.
