Heya Meoah ^^
Once you have the next step of the relic, you can't go back.
But!
You can easily roll and start another relic for another job, and then stick to Zenith only. Then feel free to accumulate as many Atma's as you want (man, they do take space T_T )
Applies to other steps as well, (Alexandrites) <-- but they stack! yay!
Last hint: If you want to dish out the money for it, you can purchase in towns from calamity salvager the version below the one you just unlocked, and then voilà!
Good luck and keep it up!

You can purchase Zenith weapons at the calamity savager I believe. Either that or the base relic (then 900 myths to upgrade it to Zenith). Clearing FATEs with a Novus/Animus equipped will give you a chance at alexendrite drops (same percentage as Atma though).
RiceisNice is mostly right. You can purchase a relic weapon which you have to turn to Zenith by purchasing the quenching oil and thavnarian mist from the NPC's in Mohr Dohna. The process is the same as before, only you don't need to beat the HM primals and other dungeons to complete. Gerolt does his thing and you stick the weapon and mist into the fire and ta-da, you have a Zenith weapon. The weapon costs about $48000 gil (if I remember right). I have three of them for the very purpose that you mention. The calamity scavengers are easily found in the major cities. Here is a link to make it more easy for you. Good luck.
