Don't look at the class names in English. Look to the Japanese names. A class is strictly defined by the weapon it uses. The inclusion of Maces would bring a new class. A one handed axe could be given as an option to MRD but the actual description specifies MRD as using two-handed axes.
DoW (JP = Fighters):
Gladiator = Sword Specialist (Swordman)
Marauder = Axe Specialist (Axeman)
Pugilist = Grappling Specialist (Grapplier/Fistfighter)
Lancer = Spear Specialist (Spearman)
Archer = Bow Specialist (Bowman)
Rogue = Twinblade Specialist (Twinblader/Duel-wielder)
The DoM (JP= Sorcerers) are a little different however and reference the type of magic they use. They also don't match up to 2.0 as well as they did to 1.0 as CNJ and THM underwent major changes. CNJ used to have its magic tied more closely to the elemental spirits and its magic was an illusion; THM focused primarily on debuffing magics and sacrifices.
Conjurer = Illusion Specialist (Illusionist)
Thaumaturge = Curse/Magic/Incantation Specialist (Witch/Incantor)
Arcanist = Tomoe* Specialist (Tomoe Grafter)
The reason we get names like Gladiator and Marauder is simply due to localization. Non-Japanese prefer this type of naming convention to identify with as opposed to the technical names.
*- Tomoe are geometric shapes, usually circular. Commonly used in Japanese family crests and business logos.

Why not add those weapon skills in traits, either skills or a weapon of choice.

This thread reminded me of 1.0 and needing to level sword and shield separately.
