The PS3/PS4 versions will drop back to the launcher window when the player exits from the game. Since the user is wishing to exit the game, it should drop back to the XMB/Home screen.

Yeah - it's silly since Windows version does actually exit / close the application. It's even more annoying when you're not logged into PSN anymore as it performs check of launcher version and forces you to re-login to PSN again (which you can indeed ignore and "force" close it anyway). Over all - it's just waste of the time so currently I use Log Out option and then Close App via PS button but that could lead to some corrupted game save data files so it's not really optimal.
EDIT:
Thinking of it now - I'm not aware of any game on PS3 or PS4 which actually can "close" / exit itself - maybe it's by design on PS systems taht you can close it only as user via PS button? If so then game upin selecting "Exit" should go to some termination screen instead of reloading the Launcher and display only message "Exit game by pressing and holding PS button and selectin Close Application".

Agreed. When we're already given two different options for "Logout" or "Exit", there's no reason for both of them to keep the game running. "Exit" should exit completely, not just switch from the game to the launcher. The launcher is for starting the game, not exiting it.
