Yeah, the visibility rules are weird in either case. It's been a long time since I really tried to test & figure them out. I just know that generally, if both my camera and character are not facing what I want to target, I'm going to have a bad time.
It's also frustrating how objects & scenery can screw with it. In Garuda fights, when you hide behind the rocks, I can target Garuda when she reappears if I adjust my camera to the side first. If the rock is blocking too much of her hit box, I can't target her. There's a LNC job quest where you have to click on a shiny in a pile of bones, and it has a really small hit box, so it's the same thing; if you can't "click" the object text for some reason, you have to futz around with position & view to get past the bones and target the thing itself.
