I don't have any issues with how it works. When it comes to the target right in front of me I just look at it and hit A (I use controller) and it targets it right away. Or I use trigger + LB or trigger + RB to cycle enemies. I've never had a problem with it and it always seems to target what I expect it to. Is this a keyboard problem?

Yes. The gamepad controls, especially if you're good at facing your character and/or camera beforehand, are much more predictable and intuitive.

Tab works fairly predictably a good deal of the time (left to right). Unfortunately, that's not a terribly useful way to cycle targets in a lot of situations, and the predictability goes out the window often enough that in order to use Tab effectively, you basically have to do camera gymnastics.

Hmm, I often have to do camera gymnastics with my controller in order to target the mob trying to eat my face rather than the guy clear across the room. I seem to remember mention made of which direction you're facing affects what mobs the targeting 'sees'. So if the closest mob is north and I'm facing NNNE, I'm always gonna target the mob wayyy over there to the east. =_=

PC has an option to auto-face what you are attacking.

The problem arises when I try to target the mob right in front of me that is trying to eat me and the cursor ends up somewhere at the back of the map on some mob that I don't care about. Cue in a bunch of click-click-click either on the monster or on the focus list (if it doesn't decide to bug the crap out and not take any kind of mouse clicks) while my face gets eaten...

Yeah, the visibility rules are weird in either case. It's been a long time since I really tried to test & figure them out. I just know that generally, if both my camera and character are not facing what I want to target, I'm going to have a bad time.

It's also frustrating how objects & scenery can screw with it. In Garuda fights, when you hide behind the rocks, I can target Garuda when she reappears if I adjust my camera to the side first. If the rock is blocking too much of her hit box, I can't target her. There's a LNC job quest where you have to click on a shiny in a pile of bones, and it has a really small hit box, so it's the same thing; if you can't "click" the object text for some reason, you have to futz around with position & view to get past the bones and target the thing itself.

I hate the tab targeting in this game as well.

I have regressed back to click targeting.

I am on pc and slowly trying to get used to my controller because it is more comfortable than kb but I have no idea what to start choosing to set the buttons to.

When you don't have a target, it works just fine, it will always target the thing closest to you first. Trying to cycle through targets properly on a keyboard, though, requires 2 keybinds or camera gymnastics. For example, having Tab set as Nearest to Farthest means that if I have a target in front of me and I want to target the enemy to the left of it, I either have to click on it, or use a separate keybind for the Farthest to Nearest function.

It's annoying because 1.) It doesn't do what it says it's supposed to do and 2.) The thing it does instead is stupid, and an awful way to have targeting work.
