I don't want to take away 'challenging' content...nor do I want in any way to diminish your efforts/rewards.
And that's what IS happening right now with the current structure....new turns come out=gimp the old ones, meaning now more people can 'clear' the same content you worked hard on easily/easier.
Now if instead, they from the get-go, had a 'storymode' slightly easier version (think current turns post nerfs), and then alongside these had the 'hard' versions, you'd still have your challenging content/rewards for your effort....as I don't think storymode should really offer much of a reward. Furthermore, if they actually made 2 versions and released them from the get-go...it would mean that they could potentially make the 'hard' versions more challenging/requiring teamwork than the current endgame situations offer because they wouldn't have to worry about re-tuning the battles later (nerfing) for the general playerbase. Also, it would mean that sexy battleaxe you earned after 12-20 hours of wiping and learning mechanics remains special down the road as it would be unlikely that every tom, dick , and jane who waited for the nerf cycle to happen now also was running around with it. Basically, if you saw people with the gear from Turn x, they earned it...as opposed to now where maybe they did...maybe they got carried, maybe they waited until nerf-farming runs happened.
Still, your assumption that most who want the 2 versions want it because they simply wish to water down endgame content is wrong. It's actually the opposite...as if they were happy with watering down the current endgame, they'd be more okay with the current nerfing cycle that happens....or be complaining more that 'storymode' doesn't = new shinies. If you notice most people supporting storymode however, aren't asking for a 'different but equal' approach...they aren't asking for nice gears, or rewards or for the nerfing of hardmode, they are simply asking for a more succent version of the hardmode, that could be entered/exited without lockouts and with the content more paced for pugging. Which by the way, doesn't necessarily = faceroll either. Probably something between Normal and EX primals in challenge level is what people are expecting. So a couple wipes etc but generally puggable. But more importantly, not locked and repeatable. Basically, take the 'static' needs and 'time commitment' needs out of it.
And while yes, you are right...there might be 3.0 whiners who cry 'hard mode is too hard' well, the nice thing is, now there will be storymode for them. I really have no sympathy for them....because either they pony up and meet the challenge or realize, maybe they aren't the best 'insert job name here' player ever. I still strongly suspect, that this 'whiner' crew will be much smaller and less vocal than those wishing there weren't lockouts, needs for statics etc. And you are right, the people who really really want to challenge the endgame content, do find ways to do so....but they are fewer and far between than those 'mildly interested'/ 'just want to experience it'. So again, having both modes is win/win for everyone.
