    Laptop, Anyone?

    Hi Guys,

Just wondering if any of you guys/gals out there are playing ARR on a laptop and having at least decent results? My home gaming rig is great but my job has recently started sending me out of town for 2-3 weeks at a time sometimes, and my old Compaq laptop would fall into pieces if I even tried to install ARR on it, lol.
I'd like to get something that can at least handle this game on medium settings, something like 1024x768 res is fine, don't need all of the eye candy but would like the game to at least be enjoyable while I'm on the road.
So anyone playing on a laptop, would you please let me know what your specs are and if you're satisfied with the gameplay overall? I really don't want to have to drop $1500 bucks on some high-falutin' machine if I can avoid it.
    Thanks much!

    Heya there ^^

Just to point out that my GF is playing on an old Satellite Laptop 13in screen in Japan, and she's very decent

The biggest limitation comes from the server LAG since she's playing on NA server while being in Japan. (She can't do Titan EX or T5 Twisters o.O )

If she can manage to play on this, anything right now at 500+ depending of your budget should be fine.

As you don't want to spend 1500$, I'm sure you don't expect the best graphics etc..

    Good luck with that

I had that situation. I bought a dell laptop that was a special edition, 17" screen and full keyboard. I just chose all the specs as if i was building a gaming tower. Its pretty awesome, the only time i have trouble is in hunts / leves with an extremely large amount of players. I run on max settings and have it connected to a 23" hdmi monitor and usb keyboard / mouse when at home. I was recently stuck at the Dallas airport for 5 hours and played just fine on their free wifi. I do have issues with heat though. At home its open and propped up with a fan on it. When i travel i use a laptop cooler between it and my lap.

    My laptop's like..
    CPU: i5-3210M
    GPU: Intel HD-4000
    RAM: 12 GB

I play on the lowest settings and zoom in + point my camera at the ground if I'm trying to run through a big crowd of people, but otherwise things run fine. Longer load time for hunts makes them a bit stressful (like 20+ seconds loading up a zone for an S-rank during active hours), but I can usually manage still. For instances, it's the connection that matters more; if I didn't use a VPN, I still wouldn't be able to get through even Titan-HM, much less SCoB.

I'm also running on Win7. If I had Win8, I'd probably be able to get back a bit more resources to squeeze out a few more fps (which, like connection speed, affects DPS). As is, I keep Task Manager open so I can check on stuff and close other programs as needed.

Toshiba Satellite ()was $550 when i purchased it)

I have this particular Laptop that I play ARR on
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I Love it and think it is awesome, But I do have trouble keeping up on some fights like Titan ex The graphics can't always keep up even when i have them set down low. But it's only in intensive fights like that. Otherwise it does fine for everything else. I use it while traveling and recently built a gaming PC for at home.

I also wiped the system and put on Windows 7 because I hate Windows 8.

For smooth medium setting gameplay you'd probably want something along the lines of:
    i5 processor
    GTX860M
    8GB RAM
and whatever your storage needs are, HDDs are cheap, SSDs are nice though.

I'd get a custom laptop with the specs you like. Clevos are good from what I hear and I've been using one for a while now. If you want to do harder encounters like Titan etc, you don't want any graphical lag on top of the network lag, so the above would probably put you back around $1000-1500. You get what you pay for when it comes to electronics. Then again, if you just go around gathering and crafting, almost any machine will likely do.

Heat is always an issue with laptops so you'll want a cooling pad/stand for any extended gaming sessions if you want to preserve your components in the long run. Another thing to note is that laptops are LOUD while under stress, so if you like to listen music and such while playing, you probably want closed headphones with decent isolation.

I got an MSI laptop that cost me $750 and it runs the game pretty smoothly. i5, GTX860M (I think) with 8GB RAM.

You should definitely get something better than this if you plan to do more than just quests, crafting and DoL-stuff:

    CPU: i5-2410M
    GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6650M
    RAM: 8GB

It's possible to run the game on lowest settings at 20-25 fps but in cities it drops down to 15 fps and below. I also, compared to my Tower-PC, have trouble getting out of AOEs (possible but with some latency really tough). Teleporting to another map also takes up to 2 minutes most of the time though it's between 20 seconds and 1 minute depending on where you are.

I use a laptop half the time I play XIV.
My specs are i7 processor, nvidia geforce gt750m, 8gigs of ram (8-12 gigs of ram is more then enough), windows 7.
I don't run into too much lag. Tbh, most lag I run into is due to my crappy internet.

As others have mentioned, laptops tend to get really hot when gaming. Mine manages to stay pretty warm, almost uncomfortably so but so far it's held up great.
I will be buying a nice cooling pad/fan/etc once payday hits because I want to prolong the shelf life.

The noise isn't too bad, but you should probably look into some headphones since you will not be in the comfort of your home.
Also, I strongly recommend that you invest into a mouse and mousepad since playing with the track pad would be insane.

That aside, I hear that Asus or Lenovo are good brands.
Someone mentioned Dell, while the idea is good my advice is to avoid their Insprion series.
They are not very gamer friendly in my experience.

The problem with laptops is that they aren't a good investment. They go obsolete relatively quickly but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't buy one, especially since your situation calls for it. Because they go dated quickly, the best thing you can do for yourself is buy smart and don't be afraid to spend the extra dollar if you are building yourself a laptop.
I think you can get a good machine under 1k$.
