How would a PvP server work without changing the whole PvE?
The game is a Final Fantasy MMORPG. Can you call a single Final Fantasy MMORPG with PvP outside of PvP zones?
Also, the genre is not about PvP.

How do duels spoil immersion? That is the weakest excuse I have ever heard for not wanting something

I dont think pvp server is need, there are various way to add in pvp:
1. System allow player to flag themself as pvp or pve with 24h CD to prevent abuse, mean the player can turn on pvp and pvp with other ppl in the current map w/o effect pve player and will not ruin anyone immersion.
2. Add in pvp map with siege style to control a stronghold or a camp. The zone normaly will be pve zone but when the time come (I think about 3 time zone with Jp prime time, US prime & Eu prime time) the zone will become pvp and the FC who register to attack a camp are allow to capture it, the other can register to defense, and those do not wish to register to attack or defense, are allow to mess thing up by join the pvp or wait until the siege time is over. The siege time can be 2 to 3h
3. On top of those 2 options, SE can add in duel system, allow player to duel and test themself every where but dungeon & raid. Of course SE will add in system in option allow player to auto deciline duel right ?

Thanks for the info ZReport! I hadn't remembered reading that,it's crazy to think about. I'm still so far from rank 40 I'll be hard pressed to even be close to catching up by the time 2.4 rolls around.
I certainly can't argue with you there, but I don't think what Toodles is proposing would be considered full-on PvP. There's a nice chunk of the community that enjoys PvP, but I doubt you'd ever see more than a couple dozen extra players at any given time because of these arenas, which I don't think would add enough stress to the zone to worry about. Granted, an S rank spawning in the zone while PvPing might cause some slow down, I'm not sure. Still I don't think its enough of a reason in itself to omit this idea.I'm almost certain the way the game works right now is not optimized for full-on PvP in any one space in the open in-game world. You can very obviously see this when you go to any Odin or S Rank fight...
I mean it's not impossible, but people need to consider it from a developers perspective as well. They have to plan based on how things would stress the server.
A true paladin... will sheathe his sword.
^exactly.
And if an S Spawns, likely those PVP'rs would quit what they're doing & join the Hunt anyway, causing virtually no difference in zone population.
It's low key & small-scale enough it shouldn't really interfere with anything else or cause server/zonal issues.
I see it being very simple for them to develop too. Far easier than creating a PVP Server & devising custom rules for it, or even zones dedicated to PVP.
Hence why this thread is labeled "compromise".
A lot of players despise the idea of PVP in FF, I disagree but I can't alter their opinion.
What I'm hoping is they'd support the option, in light, for we who do want some ability to PVP in the Open-World.
I don't think this' asking for much.

I actually like this suggestion, if it's handled properly. So long as the areas are small and not, say, a full zone that people who don't want to PVP would be restricted from entering, why not? In fact it reminds me of Lineage 2, which while having possible open-world PVP, heavily discouraged it with its karma system. So there were small "arenas" where you could enter and PVP freely, fenced-in areas which allowed spectators to watch from outside. Crossing the threshold of that area enabled it, leaving again disabled it, nice and restricted so that nobody felt forced just because they were passing through. Something small-scale like that could be fun.
Thanks! I personally stand by this suggestion because it's practically harmless, could actually serve to enhance the immersion, & is realistic (I could SE actually implementing this, since it doesn't require much in terms of development vs. say entire servers or zones).I actually like this suggestion, if it's handled properly. It saddens me so many PVE'rs will actually go out of their way to argue against it, just because they don't like PVP.
I don't mind if there is open world duel request... IF they put an option to block Duel Requestcos duel request while you do thing is bad ...... i remember Rappelz nightmare -.- duel spam request

Now I will say this... and I know some might not like it but we did have fun with this in FFXI and I don't care if there are rewards for it.
We (my FC) was really excited when Frontline was announced because we thought we could go in as a team and play together, or against one another. Of course they ended up making it to where you could only play with people who were in the same GC, which not all of us are. We actually have a healthy mix of all three GC's.
What we would really like to see is a form of Brenner from FFXI:
We would love to go in together and just beat each other up and have events, and fun that our FC can do together. Or even go in as a group against other FC's in the game!Brenner is a competition played by two teams of 1 to 72 players each. The goal of Brenner is to light all of your side's Flammen-Brenner (flame burners) and then protect the Flamme (flames) for a set amount of time.
I think a lot more of our FC would be active in PvP if we knew we could do it together. We are really like a family, and love doing things together... and I know not everyone would agree with it but at least it's me supporting PvP!
XD
and @ Toodles: Glad it was just a general comment. I'm not against PvP in any way, just never been big into it unless it was with my LS back in my FFXI days.
I'm just a bun boy, doing bun boy things.

The best compromise that SE can do for PvP is seriously ease up on the grind. Change it so that you can easily get from rank 1 to rank 40 in like 50-60 FL 1st place wins (max exp) and introduce a "Prestige" system where you can reset your rank but also can gain more AP to use more skills with the potential to equip all skills once you do it enough times. You can even add title icons next to your name to show that you Prestige.
This satisfies both parties, those who just want to glamour and those who are really dedicated and will rank up multiple times to gain new and more abilities and titles. Once they fix this then they can work on adding more content. I don't want a competition between PvP and PvE for which I should dedicate my grind time to.
