    Desynthing

Hello. So I am completely new to desynthing, haven't started yet actually. All my DoH are lvl50, so I could level any of them. Since I got my artisan's tools for the classes I wanted, the next logical step to take crafting to the next level would be desything. I could just buy it from the MB and buy the masterbooks that way, but since the new recipes require demimaterias anyway I thought it'd be better in the long run to level it myself. I saw it's possible to level up to three, but my question is, what is the point of leveling more than one? It seems time consuming and I'm not sure why I'd level more than one.

    1. To have more options on what you can desynth
    2. There are a few items that are only available via desynth

    I have:
    a. cln/fsh because I want to get the swim suits/waterproof cotton
    b. gsm because it is easy to get ilvl70 accessories to desynth
    c. alc because I've managed to pick up a bunch of primal books that I want to desynth for those materia

Once I get "enough" waterproof cotton I will probably change out cln for crp or bsm because I have a bunch of those primal weapons as well.

Goldsmith was my first choice to level. I'm not too sure what else to level. I don't think I'd level 3, probably 2. Does leveling a second one reduce the points you got in the first one?

Not as of yet. There's a desynth cap of 300. This counts for the cumulative desynth skill level. At this point you'll start decreasing desynth skills as you increase others. Every crafting skill of level 30 and higher automatically counts for level 1 desynth. So depending on how many crafting skills you have you can get up to 3 skills at desynth 100 in theory.

I don't think it's currently yet known whether the desynth level will increase in future patches, and if with that the cumulitive desynth cap would increase as well.

One thing to be wary of when leveling multiple desynthesis classes: Whenever you gain skill in one desynth for one craft, there's a chance you'll LOSE skill in another craft. For example:

Your Culinarian desynthesis skill increases by 0.11!
Your Goldsmithing desynthesis skill decreases by 0.01!

This is the danger in leveling multiple crafts. When you level one, there's a significant chance that you'll delevel the other. The good news is that the amount you lose is always just 0.01, which is not a lot. The bad news is that as desynthesis nears 100, every fraction of a point counts since it's difficult to obtain items that will skill you up. Every loss is painful.

There's a couple ways of dealing with this problem. One way is to put a little bit of work into every class's desynthesis. That way, if you get a decrease, it's more likely to come off of one of the classes you don't care about rather than the one that you do. This, obviously, isn't a 100% perfect solution, though.

The other way is to make sure that you make sure you do a desynth in the class you want to "protect" every now and then. When you desynth in a class, that class becomes "immune" to decreases in skill for the next four synths. So, if I desynth a ring for Goldsmithing, I know that I'm safe for the next four fish I desynth in Culinarian. After that, though, I'll need to desynth another ring or something if I want to continue to protect Goldsmithing.

SE has also mentioned that they're looking into a way to "lock" a class to keep it permanently safe. We don't know any of the details yet, and there's no guarantee this feature will be added at all, but if they do then protecting your hard-earned desynthesis levels should become much easier!

Seems like the way desynth is designed is...Terrible. It sounds dumb. I guess I'll just level goldsmith, it seems like they can easily get all sorts of demimaterias, or am I wrong?

By the ways, thanks to all of you who replied, really helpful ^^

GSM can readily access all sorts of demimateria, and probably has the easiest access to mastercraft. Some crafts have acess to specific ones (like ALC being the only one that can get crags, CRP has a easy source of fieldcraft III)
