What is probably going to happen is that in the expansion, the new level 50 zone/mobs/quests will be tuned to players in i50-55 gear, and said quests will give out items of significantly higher item levels. By the time you are on somewhere between level 55-60 quests/mobs the gear will probably match coil 3 endgame stuff, and then the level 60 entry-level dungeons will most likely be an improvement over Coil 3.

The reason I think it will be done this way is that it will provide a smooth transition from level 50 to level 51 and beyond. Then, At some point the quest gear will match or be an improvement upon Coil 3 providing the gear reset that we get every major patch.

They've stated the increase in ilvl is going to slow so we don't have Big Number Syndrome.

Is there anyone else here who doesn't necessarily want a level cap increase? I'd rather our characters grow more horizontally in the future, at least for a while before they do increase the level cap. It would be a shame and a waste to release an expansion, raise the level cap, and immediately trivialize the old level 50 content. All for what, bigger numbers? Who cares about that?

the case for lateral progression has been made in the past but it's mostly been drowned out by "I want to level more, because bigger numbers"

I suspect that there will be:
    • Two new tiers of white crafted with level requirements between level 51 to 55 and 56 and 60 made with mats from level 50 and 60 gathering nodes found in new areas.
    • New level 55 and 60 1 Star and 2 Star greens with ilevels of i90 and higher.
    • One or two new blue gear tiers with level requirements of 60 and the highest ilevel until the expansion's first patch.

The level cap increase will happen with the expansion. That much is all but guaranteed.

As for Item Level, it will probably continue going at a gradual pace in steps of 20 every two content patches. That in mind, I predict the next in the series of endgame gear will be i130-i135.

And just to tack on an opinion on why people shouldn't ask the question this thread poses: People who speed through MMOs are what's wrong with the genre. Slow the hell down and quit complaining about a lack of content in a game that updates at an already impressive speed.

I think you guys are talking about "power creep" right?
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_creep

It's not too hard to figure out what's going to happen when the character max level goes to level 60.

It's not like you'd get i130 gear from the first quest you pick up while leveling to 51....

Odds are you'll probably get something more like ilvl90 when first starting quests (don't forget about the people that buy the game when the expansion comes out, they will be leveling from lvl1).

Maybe when you hit 60 is when the quest gear will finally hit ilvl130(or whatever the top end for lvl50 will be) or close to it. It would make sense if they wanted to save any further ilvl jumps for actual raids, new token farm (tomes?) or at least a new lvl60 dungeon. The reason being is upping the ilvl is not something they can do forever without troubles.

At the very least, the numbers are going to get harder and harder to math. :P

"Ermagerd, you got that new ilvl999x^1244 weapon!?!? soooo jelly!"

When they raise the level cap, the level 50 gear we have now will be useless. We won't see a level cap increase until the expansion hits sometime next year. There will be new gear in the expansion for use to obtain. The gear we have now, definitely won't upgrade with us.

Thus is the condition of current day MMORPGs. Don't get attached to your gear. It only fills a slot temporarily, no matter how good it is currently. With new content, comes new gear to chase.

For me, the idea of a level cap increase is interesting not because it comes with better stats, but because it comes with new class and/or job abilities. It will be interesting to see if the new tools we get will have a significant effect on our current DPS and enmity ability rotations.

As for trivializing old level 50 content, that boat has already sailed. Such old content is ALREADY trivialized by the very fact that we can wear ilvl 100+ gear at level 50. Run Amdapor Keep with a team wearing no equipment higher than ilvl 55, then do it again with your pimped-out ilvl 100+ gear. Needless to say, the difference is significant.

If it's still a problem, they can always add a level 50 level cap to the old stuff. Wouldn't stop folks from overpowering it with high ilvl gear, though.

I think when lvl cap is increase the ilvl will reset. Example if lvl50 gear max ilvl is 130 then the lvl 60 gear will be more powerfull than the lvl50 ilvl130 gear. And then the ilvl will start from 60+ for the lvl60 gear.
