There are several obvious distinct economic advantages to having multiple characters. Here are 3: Unspoiled nodes, treasure maps, daily roulettes.
XI: Zeroblade, Titan Server

Thanks for the information.
Anyway I think these advantages probably are not sought by the developers, they just happen to be there.
There are people that have FC just for themselves, or maybe for themselves and their alt classes, but it's not for what FC were created. Nor for giving items between alt characters of the same player.
You can make enough gil with just one character. You would need more play time to profit from the advantages of multiple alt characters, but if someone has the time and there's the possibility, it may be worth it for him.
That's a major source of the problem. People are resorting to using FCs (which are supposed to be the game's primary social groups) to cover for what should be a basic feature of the game, the ability to transfer items. If the ability (which we're already paying them money for) were added as it should have been from the outset, then people would be free to use FCs for their intended purpose. As it is, everyone is forced into a choice of either having a real FC or else being able to coordinate your alts. That shouldn't be a choice, we should have both as long as we're paying for it.
He'll as much as I hate to say this, I would pay 2-4 more bucks a month if I could do this right here.
The ability to use my ventures and move items would be so much easier.
