Is it possible to use the Moogle Mail service to send items to other avatars that you have created? I know it is possible to send items to friends but can this also apply to sending mail to your own avatars?

Nope. In early 2.0 there was a minor bug that allowed you to send a friend request to your alts while they were in a duty, but this has since been removed and is now nearly impossible to do. People who did so before still have their friended alt on their friend list.
The only other way to transfer items between characters on the same account is basically another person handing off from one to the other, or the use of a free company chest (at your own risk, if it's not "your" company).

this game lol, 10/10.
They don't want u having alt classes on same char, since they share tome/loot caps.
annnnnnd they don't want you supporting an alt character oO which is strange since it's in their best interests ($$$) to get ppl to want to upgrade to multi char accounts.
There is a good reason why you can't mail your alts. And it isn't just money (but I'm sure that plays into it). If everyone could mail their alt characters, then suddenly everyone has 320 retainer slots instead of 40. The market would stagnate. Why bother updating prices if you have 320 slots with which to sell? But when you only have 40 (the base amount without paying extra per month), each of those slots is a little more precious. You'll be more willing to move your product rather than sit on some overpriced item for weeks.
Besides, the game is designed to only use one character. One character can play all jobs/classes. I know why people make alts, due to the soldiery caps and coil cooldowns. Seems like a lot of work for so little benefit though.
You can have all 8 chars in a free company which makes "mailing" between them extremely easy anyways so this is a terrible excuse. There is a good reason why you can't mail your alts. There is a hard mail limit of 1mil gil per letter and a person can only have 20 items in their inbox before they have to take it out to receive more items. It's an extremely limiting system as it is. FC chest transfer is better in pretty much every way.

The trade/mail 1mil limit is really annoying.
Had to trade someone 30mil the other week, very tedious.
If you were free to mail to alts, then people would have no reason to spend an additional $2 per month per extra retainer. Simple as that.
I have no prayer for that...
One of these things has nothing to do with the other, which shows how little thought you put into your one-liner reply.
If my main is a crafter but my alt is not and my alt gets ore, how am I supposed to use it on my main? This is not an issue of storage space. This is an issue of item-use efficiency.

That's the strangest part about this rule. When they're charging extra money for the ability to have multiple characters on a server, it makes no sense for them not to allow people to make use of having multiple characters on the same server.
I'd be really surprised if there's all that many players who use all 40 that we have now. Some do, certainly, and there's probably even a few who got extra retainers for that purpose (rather than the more common purpose of storing items). But the limit on MB slots is really only of concern to those few players who treat the Market Board itself as a primary focus of the game. I've rarely used up the 20 slots I get with one retainer, and have only a couple times resorted to selling a few things from my second retainer. Having access to more Market Board slots wouldn't change the number of items players have to sell.
Besides, if you really want access to playing the market and selling more than 40 items, you can already switch alts, selling a few things from each of them. You just need to use the character you're going to sell them from to acquire the items you want to sell.
Exactly. We need to be able to send crafting components to our crafter, and crafted items from our crafter to our other characters.
(Currently I'm in a small enough FC that I can get away with using the FC chest for this purpose, but it's impossible for players in larger, more active FCs.)
I suppose the possibility of having different characters in the same account is thought for characters that will have separate lives, not for characters that will co-operate with each other. The reason for having different characters should be other than co-operating one with the other, if there would be an advantage then it would become a better choice to have several characters, and it's not what is sought.
Another reason for several characters in the same account is the possibility of more than one family member playing with the same account and saving their progress in different characters.
