Specifically you'd want to compare the mechanic force given to the arrow via the tension of the bow (the Bow after all is little more than a device to apply tension and release it into a projectile) versus the weight and leverage applied by a lance.

Arrows are pretty dang destructive given their size that I would say they are piercing through and through. A lance operates more on the "get in with its sharp tip" and then "ruin you by introducing a lot more volume than that hole was intended to allow, and then having it wiggled around a bit during the heat of combat before it is PULLED OUT".

But, this is a game, so we don't need to get that destructive nor descriptive. A well placed thrust from a lance kills an elephant much the same way a well aimed arrow will. A lot of these monsters are about the size of an elephant so I'd roll with that.
